Allen. State superintendent of public instruc tion shows. The amount thus returned to the State, all of which was available for the county superintendents and could have been used without question, was divided between rural and charter schools. The rural schools failed to use the amount appropriated by $85,-093-67, and the charter schools turned back $12,213.09 to the State. Mecklenburg turned back to the State the largest amount, $7,342.04, more than $5,000 of which was from the ruarl schools. Person turned back $3,783.43, while counties turning back $3,000 and $3,500 were Columbus, Lincoln, Stanley. Yadkin, and Yancey, and counties turning back from $2,000 to $3,000 were Ashe, Buncombe, Cleve land, Haywood, Iredell. Pitt, and I Randolph. Anson, Cherokeen. Crav. en, Gaston, Halifax, Harnett, Hender son. Johnston, Macon, McDowell, Rich mond, Robeson, Rockingham, Sampson, Stokes, and Wayne turned back more than $1,000 each. On the other hand, Guilford turned back only $19.74, while Graham with $71.04 and Mont gomery with $87.95 were the only other counties returning less than $100. and 40 others turned back less than $500.
