William Green, pres ident of the American Federation of Labor, said tonight that more thaa 1.200,000 men had gone back to work since March. Figures published earlier today by. the federation estimated the return to work during April at 629.000, but Green said this should be raised to 735,000. and added that 495.000 had been re-empkyed during May. "The employment gain in April, dua as it was to the rebound from criseg." he said, "could not be taken as inw dicating an upfard trend. Now that gains have continued for a second month, there is more reason to believa that foundations for an upward trend may be formed." Here are Green's figures for un employment recently: March, 1933, 13.770.000. April. 1933, 13035.000. May, 1933, 12 450.000. NAVY IS ASKING FOR 290 PLANES V I 4. WHAT PRICE HEALTH? Expert Says 1- t 4 -r 4- v 4 4 4 4- 4 4 4 4- Waynesvifle Laundry If the baby could cry at a higher pitch.' he' might make his own milk more digestible. A study of the effect 01' sounds' in causing chemical changes in milk and other substances, including making the proteins in milk more easily di gtstibk', was reported today to the American Association for the A1 vancement' of .Science by Ors. K. W. Flosdorf and L. A, Chamber of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. Scientists have recently learned that bacteria in milk, water, fruit juices and other liquids' can lv killed by supe,. -sounds". .of very high pitch-. Drs. Flosdorf and Chambers discov ered they could produce chemical changes by sounds well within the range of human hearing. With heir sound - making instruments t h e y wrought a number of chemical reac tions generally alleclOd only by ex tremely big temporatur.'H. They did r.t ordinary room tcmfierattires. The coadjulated proteins, such as albumen-' and casein. A hen's egg. rich in these substances, they reported, appeared to have been sott boiled un der the noise treatment. This proposal would take $9,362. 000 of the industrial control aot'a public work funds. In addition, tha navy would like $5,900,000 for planes to fill the places in the five-year pro gram of those assigned to the eight inch gun crusiers and the new air craft carrier Ranger. The navy's present plane strength hovers around the 1000 marn, but Rear Admiral Ernest King, chief of naval aeronautics, s'aid June 10 the 32 ships in the new program will re quire 290 additional planes. Con struction of the new planes would bo spread over a throe-year period, de pending on times of completing the ships.
