ganization entertained with a tea at
the home of the chapter president.

During the afternoon Miss Ellen
Louise Killian sang several old South
ern melodies. Tea. sandwiches, and
cakes were served by Mrs. C- C.

Roy Campbell.
Mrs. Hyatt and Mrs. Martin re
tired from office the day before the
tea. Mrs. Hyatt was succeeded by
Mrs. Preston Thomas of Asheville.
ROTARIANS TO HAVE "LADIES
NIGHT"
The Waynesville Rotary Club will
observe "Ladies Night" tomorrow
with a dinner and program of enter
tainment in the dining room of the
Methodist church.
Several months have elapsed since
the last affair of this kind and mem
bers of the club are making every
effort to have Friday evening's gath
ering enjoyable to all.
All Rotarians and Rotary-Anns are
invited and expected to be at the
church at 7:ti0 p. m.

Mrs. James Harden Howell was

of the Ameikan Revolution at the
October meeting last Wednesday af
ternoon at her home "Windover."
Mrs. Howell received her guests in
the living room which was attractive
ly decorated with yellow and red
dahlias. ,
The main feature of the afternoon s
program was the paper given by Mrs.
J. E. Henderson, of Canton. Her sub
ject was "Gen. (Washington, Com
manding Chief." The magazine was
reviewed by Mrs. W. F. Swift
A card was read from Mrs. Sydney
Cooper, of Henderson, state D. A. K.
regent, extending greetings to the
chapter and requesting that all member-,
attend the district meeting in
Asheville.
Notes were also read from Mrs.
Charles E. Quinlan and Mrs. Ernest
Hyatt thanking the chapter for flow
ers sent to them since they have been
confined to their homes on account of
illness.
The regent. Mrs. Howell, read an
invitation to the chapter to be pres
ent at the unveiling of three tablets
on Rendez Vous Mountain, October
14, in memory of Col. Benjamin Cleve
land, who assembled 225 picked men
at this place and led them to Kings
Mountain. These tablets were

During the social hour following
the meeting the hostess served a salad
course. She was assisted by Miss

The twelfth annual meeting of the
First District, North Carolina Daugh
ters of the American Revolution was
held yesterday at the George Vander-
bi It hotel in Asheville wnth about
100 persons in attendance.
A feature of the morning session
was the address of Mrs. Sydney P.
Cooper, of Henderson, state regent.
Her address consisted mainly of a
reviicw of activities of the state or
ganization.
The meeting was called to order
by Mrs. Gilbert II. Morris district
chairman, who presided. Mrs. Ralph
Van Landingham. of Charlotte, made
a talk on the Crossnore School. Pre
ceding Mrs. Landingham's talk, Mrs.
T. Lenoir Gwyn, district chairman
for Crossnore, spoke briefly.

day for a few day's visit to the
former's sister, Mis. D. A. Baker, and
Mr. Baker. '
Miss Mary Glee Ferguson left Wed
nesday to return to Knoxville, Tenn.,
where she is attending a business
school, after spending the week-end
at home. She motored to Knoxville
with her brother, Rankin Ferguson,
and her uncle. Sam Queen, who re
turned Thursday.
DISTRICT MEETING OF FEDER
ATED CLUBS HERE 30TH
The Federated Cluba of Waynes
ville and the Woman's Club of Clyde
are making plans for entertaining the
club women of the first district on
Monday. October o0.
The meeting will be called to order
bv the district president, Mrs. R. N.
Barber, at 10 o'clock in the Baptist
church where the business session
will be held. The meeting will be
concluded at the Masonic Temple
where luncheon is to be served and the
junior clubs of the district will furn
ish entertainment with vocal and
instrumental music, readings, and
stunts.
Many prominent visitors are ex
pected ' including Mrs. R. IL Latham,
State President of N. (' Federation
of Woniens Clubs, and Mrs. Howard
O. Eth ridge, chairman of the dis
tricts. Mr. Louis A. Smith of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture will de
liver the principal address. Mr,
Smith will speak on the proposed new
pure food law and display illustra
tions showing how the present law
has been evaded and the new law pro
poses to bring cosmetics and curative
devices of every description under
government control. It prohibits all
false and misleading advertising of
foods, drugs, etc.. through any me
dium whatever.
The public is invited to all of the
meetings. A special invitation is ex
tended members of the P. T. A- asso
ciations. D- A. R-. U. D. C, Legion
Auxiliary, and 0. E. S. The music
Club will have charge of the musical
program. Mrs. Gulley. state chair
man of music, and Mrs. Richard Bar
