Fall Army Worm Begins To Appear The fall army worm, capable of doing tremendous damage to hay ana corn crops, has begun to appear in North Carolina. "This pest is not yet very abun dant '' fin, Is Ilr H R Pnltnn r. search entomologist at State College, uui wie wui ms mv-e-te iayiuiy ai.u may do considerable damage in Sep tember. The worm feeds on a vari; ty of crops and farmers should watch their fields for the first sign of in festation. We would expect the worm to start in fields wheiv there is con siderable grass. Damage to corn may be severe before the tassels are out, after which the worm feeds on the ear in the same manner as the corn ear worm '1 Dr Ftiltnn oivc L-fcinim the fields free from grass m-y help in control but when infestation is great, the worm.- will teed on crops free from grass. In some cases, it is possible to s:ivi. the feed value of hav cl'ODS bv immediate cutting. The field then -hnulil ilUUed to kill as manv the worms and pupae as possible. When the worms start traveling to e.ird Mniitner rroi). a deeo furrow may be run along-side the field until the worms can be poisoned with bran bait. This br.-.n bait is made by mixing 5o0 pounds of wheat bran, one pound nf nHiis I'-peii or white arsenic, two iry 1 1 (in nf black st ran mollosses am enough water to make a cruinoo mash- The br.'.n and poison are tirsv mixed dry. and the molasses, diluted with water, is added. Add more water until all the bran mix is mois tened. Five pounds of dry bran should make enough bait for one avre. Drg a long rope over the that the worms will be knock ed down to where they will make contact with the bait. Scatter the bait over the tield after sundown, Dr. Fulton says.
