SOCIETY PAGE Society News Local Items o o Mrs. Hilda Way Gwyn, Editor Phone 137 MARRIAGE OF INTEREST TAKES PLACE IN MIAMI One of the most important events on the spring social calendar in Miami was the marriage of Miss Mary Bell Wall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. Lowery Wall and Frank Smathers, Jr., son of Judge and Mrs. Frank Smath ers, which took place on Wednesday evening, March 27, in a brilliant cer emony at the Miami Beach Communi ty church, which was followed by a! reception at the Surf Club. i The Miami Daily News of the next Sunday carried a page devoted entire ly to photographs of Mr. and Mrs. Smatheij and the feminine attend ants, who were, Mrs. Robert Vance, of Washington, Pa., matron of honor, Miss Gail Clawson, of Meadville, Pa., Miss Hetty Honey,. Miss Beverly Beach, and Miss Virginia Smathers, as bridesmaids. The bride attended Baldwin School at Byrn Mawr, Pa., and Gunton Hall, Washington, I). C. She is a member of the Miami Junior League and pop ular in a wide circle of friends. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. Lowery Wall, of Miami Beach, form erly of Pittsburgh, Fa. The groom is the son of Judge and Mrs. Frank Smathers, of Miami, and Waynesville, and the grandson of "Dr. and Mrs. B. F. Smathers and Mrs. S. A. Jones, and the late Col. Jones, of Waynesville. His ancestors were among the leading pioneers of the county. He has spent many summers here with his parents. He attended Culver Military Acatkmy and re eeived his pre-law course at the Uni versity of North Carolina and was graduated from the University of Miami in law. He is a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and is associated with his father in the practice of law. MR. AND MRS. DAN W ATKINS GIVEN HOUSE WARMING Mr. and Mrs. Dan Watkims, who have been occupying the Shoolbred cottage on the Balsam Road, .nave recently moved into the Keener house in Grimoall Park. On Wednesday evening a group of friends gave them a house warming. Mr. and Mrs. Watkins were the recipients of many useful and attractive gifts in obser vance of the occasion. Barber, Jr., Mrs. Ruth Williams, and Mr. Ed Mears, March Bride DISTRICT MUSIC CONTEST TO BE HELD HERE The Western North Carolina High School District will hold the annual Music Contest on Saturday, April the l-'ith, at 10 o'clock in the studio of Miss Grace Crocker on Main street. Students from Bryson City, Canton and Wnvnesville will be contestants. MUSICIANS AND GUESTS HON- ORED WITH PARTIES On Friday evening Mrs, H. ,W Bau com entertained a group of the young social set of the town in honor of her daughter, Miss Edith Baucom, Miss Mary Penland McCracken and her guests, Miss Dorij Osborne, of West Asheville, and Miss Amelia Torian, of Spartanburg. Then on Saturday evening Miss Mc Cracken honored her house guests with a delightful affair at her home on Hazel street. Games were enjoyed throughout the evening. Mr. Richard Magruder, formerly of Orlando, Fla., and now of Durham, spent several days with his aunt, Mrs. H. C. Lindsley, on Pigeon street. Mr. Magruder was ret iming from Florida where he stood the bar examination. He was one of the thirteen of the class of 75 which passed the exam ination. M. Medford on Love Lane, with .urs. u. k. Alartin a.s associate hos tess. For the occasion spring flowers adorned the living room. The meeting was presided over by Mrs. O. K. Martin, president. It as opened with the usual realistic pro gram after which the routine of busi ness was taken up. Various officers and committee chairmen presented re ports. Mrs. Martin read a letter from Mrs. Roy Campbell in which .she a.sked that she be relieved of her duties as secretary of the organiza tion, .urs. (.ampoell s resignation was accepted with deep regret, as she has served the chapter in manv wavs and has been for some time one of its most interesting and active members. Mrs. F. K. Alley, Jr., was appointed as secretary to fill out the unexpired term of Mrs. Campbell. A number of communications from various officers 'relative to the work of different committees Were read. Mrs. t F. Kirkpatrick had the pa per for the afternoon, her subject be ing, "Montie Hello." She gave manyl interesting historical facts regarding this famous old Southern Mansion. PIANO AND VIOLONCELLO RE CITAL GIVEN BY LOCAL GIRLS Miss Mary Penland McCracken and Miss Edith fyner Baucom were heard in a joint piano and violoncello re cital on Friday evening. A large number of friends and music lovers were present and they were enthusi astic in their praise of the young musicians. Miss McCracken plays with style and expression and her tones have much depth for a musician of her age Miss Baucom was at her best1 with a lovely singing tone in her group of early classics Miss McCracken is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. Theo. McCracken, and Miss Baucom is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. H. W. Baucom. Both young girl.-s are pupils of Miss Grace Crocker. Queen was hostess for a miscellaneous shower, given on Fri day night in honor of Mrs. J. T. Chappelt, Jr., who was before her recent marriage, Miss Anne Davis, of Canton. Quantities of spring flowers were used in decorating. After contests were enjoyed the guests went into the dining' room where a delicious salad course, nuts, mints, cake and coffee were served. The honoree was presented many lovely gifts by those attending the afTair. . The public u: cordially invited to attend. DR. AND MRS. J. F. ABEL TURN FROM FLORIDA RE- Dr. and Mrs. J. F. Abel, who have spent the, past month in Florida, re turned., to Waynesville on Friday. During the first part of their visit they stayed in Jacksonville, .where Dr. Abel attended a medical meeting. The remainder of the time was spent with their daughters, Mrs. Winifred Baker, in Orlando,. Mrs. Robert Os borne, and Mrs. Allen McLean, in Tampa. WOMAN'S CLUB TO MEET The Woman's Club wiii meet Thurs day, April 18, at the home of Mrs. John Hipps, on Academy street, with Mrs. William Hannah as associate hostess. The subject of the, program, is; "The Indian in our State," and Dr. Foght, Supt. of the Cherokee Reser vation, is the .speaker for the after noon. The Inuian music is in charge of Miss Margaret Stringfield, Miss Margaret Terrell and Mrs. Fred Martin. The meeting begins at 3 o'clock. : Mrs. Awa Mingus, of Spartanburg, S, C, returned to her home on Sun day after spending a week with her cousin, Miss Nancy Killian. Miss Hester Anne Withers, who spent the spring holidays with her family, has returned to Agnes Scott College. She was accompanied by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. With ers. While in Atlanta they were the guests of Mrs. S. C. Satterthwait. -.---. .. Dr. William Sloan, who is stationed at a CCC camp near Bryson City, spent the week-end with his family at "Blink Bonnie." He had as his guest Lt. Farmer, of Atlanta. dramatics, stated that the. annual reading contest of the club had been held since the last meeting. She an nounced that Miss Barbara . Brandt was the winner of the gold medal and Miss Mary- Medford, had made sec I ond; winning the cash prize. Miss Qumlan -recommended that the con test of next year be held in the fall instead of the spring, when there are so many outside activities for the pupils. Mrs. Ben Colkitt in the absence of Mrs. R. L. Prevost, chairman of fi nance, gave a report of the benefit party and read the list of merchants vvho so generously contributed the prizes. The president urged the mem bers to study the proposed narcotic law and lend their influence toward its adoption.. Mrs. Jerry Colkitt, chairman of membership, gave her report. Mrs. Richard N. Barber, Jr., chair man of music, who is also chairman of the program for the observance of National Music Week of the Waynes ville Music Club, asked that the club sponsor this program. Mrs. G. Latta Clement, of Nik-Nar Nursery, of Biltmore, addressed the club on the subject of "Native Plants." The speaker showed a remarkable knowledge of wild flowers which has been gained by studying the plants in their native habit, and experimenting in the cultivation of them. She sU.Vd that the United States has more beau tiful native plants than any other country in the world. She discussed at length the plants of this section.
