According to J. C. James, principal,
the Hazelwood Elementary School is
enjoying a very successful year. This
is probably the largest elementary
.-v hool in the county ' outside of the
special chartered district of Canton,
bt-injr of standard rating and having
a.n enrollment of over five hundred
pupils. Of course., the majority of
those attending live in town; however,
Ninevah, Allen's Creek, Plott, and
Hyatt Creeks send a number by bus
transportation.
The Hazelwood school, beginning
at S:IiO in the morning and icontinu
ing until 3:00 in the afternoon, has
hud good attendance even dmng the
worst part of the past winter, having
an average of ninety-three per cent
in daily attendance. The largest class,
with a membership of fifty pupils, is
Uing taught by Miss Margaret Bur
gin. The smallest class in school con
tains thirty-five.
Mr. James stated that probably
more than forty would be sent next
year to the high school, with about
tiie same number to the junior high.
The Hazelwood school, operated on
a straight grade basis rather than
the departmental system, contains one
of the outstanding faculties in Hay
wood county
have degrees from leading colleges
and the majority of them have the
highest type of State certificate. By
their direction the school has shown
a steady and remarkable improve
ment, especially during the last two
years under the principalship of Mr.
i James.
Other teachers are Mrs. Sam
Knight, Mrs. 'Aaron Prevost, . . Miss
Daisy Boyd, Mrs. Eva Cole, Mis, Eva
Leatherwood, Miss Mayme Leather
wood, Miss Mildred Medford, Miss
Margaret Burgin, Miss Mary String
field, and Miss Hester Ann Withers.
Besides what is usually termed the
regular school work, the elementary
takes an active part in community
affairs, enters the annual declama
tion and recitation contest which is
sponsored by the county school sys
tem, participates in athletic events,
especially the Haywood County track
meet, and renders special programs,
chapel programs and plays.
Mr. James stated that the school
was composed of students with an
average scholastic standing, having an
honor roll of about five per room, or
forty-five or fifty for the .school each
month. The principal was especially
complimentary of HazelwoodV sixth
grade, praising it as one of the best
if not the best, he had ever known
in any elementary school.
Mr. James is an outstanding sup
porter of Parent-Teachers' Associa
tions, and gave the Hazelwood organ
isation credit for much of the suecess
of the local school... "The chief mo
tive of a P. T. A. is to develop a bet
ter understanding between the par
ents and teachers," according to this
principal. "Our organization is splen
did," continued Mr. James, "but our
greatest need, and my ambition for
this year, is a better one. We need
more members in order to reach more
people. We need active ones like
those we have."
In concluding the interview Mr.
James ptated that he was well pleased
with" the progress being made by the
Ha.olwood school, that lhis work was
y iy pleasant although of a nature to
keep him always busy, and that he
ixpected the elementary pupils of

Another Precedent
The quiet and diminutive '.-Senator
from Arkansas. Mrs; Hattie Wyatt
Caraway, has been ft consistent setter
of political precedents. When her
husband died in 1 93 1, she was chosen
to till his unexpired term in the Sen
ate. On May 9. 1932 she was called
to the chair of the upper chamber,
the first woman to wield the presid
ing Rravei. A few months later, she
ran for. reelection, successfully becom
ing the first woman, to win a full
term. Last; Wednesday the senator
broke another precedent; She became
the first woman to preside at an open
Senate hearing. Clad In black she

Committee considering a Stream-Po-lution
