Miss Jennie Towles,
Given Burial Sunday
Last rites were held on Sunday
morning at 11 o'clock at the Towles
Farm on Crabtree, for Miss Jennie
Towles. 77, who died in Moreantnn.
, Friday evening at 7 o'clock. Rev. O.
C. Landrum, pastor of the Pre.sbyte.

the services. Interment was in the
, family burial plot near the home.

! Miss Jennie, as she was known
throughout the county, va born in
Bladen county, ami came to this see
t tion when a child with hvr parents.
: She was the daughter of Rev. and Mrs!
D. T. Towles. Rev. Towles was a
Presbyterian minister and a colporteur
of the American Bible Society, and
was a pioneer, in the work of his de
nomination in this county. He aV-o
'i taught school at Bethel and Crabtree.
In 1809 Miss Towles organized the
first Presbyterian Sunday school in
; the Crabtree section, and the late Dr.
R. P. Smith became interested in her
i work and established a day school in
' connection. Several orphans were
'given a home by Miss Towles, and
'the work increased, until it was
; deemed advisable to have a children's
: home. The present Black Mountain
; Orphanage i.s the outgrowth of these
early efforts of Miss Towles on Crab
tree, who spent her life in behalf of
i others.
! Surviving are one sister, Mrs. F. M.
I ownsend, of Ronerson, and several
nieces and nephews.

This week the North Carolina Ru-ra'
Electrification authority announced
that 1,250 miles of rural lines to cord
$1 ,:?4 1,014 and -serve ;K,088 customers
had been constructed or authorized
since the authority was set up last
June, The monthly report for March

wood have been meeting last week and
this according to schedule, and study
ing primarily the place and use of
eggs in the family diet.
