Of .WashinKt.ur Over 3,000 Indians On Cherokee Reser vation Near Park More than 3,000 Cherokee Indians live in the territory adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. These Indians are the rem nant of a once strong nation that formerly inhabited this region Before 1936 the Cherokee' Indian tribe now living in Oklahoma livej here. But in 1J36 the Indians living here sold their lands east of the Mjs sissippi to the United States govern ment for $5,000,000. Late in the year 183(3 many of these Indians were nersuadtM to e-ivp nn their lands and go West, but a large numDer ol them retuSed to go. In the winter of 1836-37 General Winfield Scott was ordered: to use military force. He rounded up many of these intnans, Dut a small band escaned and tok refuge in the fastness of the Smoky Mountains; and neither the Federal government nor anv other force could drive them out. 1 hose who now reside in the Cher okee Reservation are the descendants of those fugitives who escaped Gen eral Scott. They now live in a ter ritory secured to them bv the Fed eral government, have many of their own laws, and their own form of eov- crnment, although they are subject in ins raws oi state ana watiun. They have a well organized school system provided for bv the National government. Many of them have had opportunities to attend colleges and universities, and, as a whole, the Chcrokees are progressing educationally.
