Well, boys, the 'lection is
over, but cold weather is just
starting in. According to all
these amateur weather men,
we are in for some real cold
weather this winter.
I went in to see Ote Bur
gin this week but he was out
somewhere buying more win
ter stuff. I did find out that
all this other new stuff will
be in by next week.
I haven't seen much of the
Rurgin boys this fall, since
they have been so busy sell
ing merchandise, and let me
tell you, this here bargain
basement is certainly a
gathering point for bargain
hunters.

J. N. Shoolbred, 80,

married to Miss Mollie Toncray,
daughter of Col. and Mrs. Charles P.
Toncray, of Elizabethton.
He first came to this section in the
interests of Northern capital, for ex
aminations regarding the possibility
of workable iron ore near Sylva.
Thirty years ago, he and his family
moved to Waynesville and since that
time have been prominently identified
with the religious, social, and civic
interests. !
At one time Mr. Shoolbred was city
engineer of Waynesville. He has !
been employed on various jobs of !
construction for the Champion' Fibre
Company.
Mr. Shoolbred, who was highly re
spected by all who knew him, had a
great capacity for making friends.
Widely read and traveled, though mod
estly reserved, and with a keen sense
of humor, he was a delightful compan
ion. Interested at all times in commu
nity affairs he never failed to answer
any call made upon him. He was a
member of Grace Episcopal church
and had served as senior warden for
twenty-nine years. He was deeply at
tached to his home and his family.
Surviving are his widow, two daugh
ters, Mrs. Robert E. Wood, 0f Eliza
bethton, and Mrs. Walter Taylor, f
Baltimore, Md., and one son, Wiil'um
Shoolbred, of Waynesville, and thrtr
grandchildren, Miss Mary Dorothy
Wood and Robert E. Wood, Jr.. '
Elizabethton, and Margaret Anr.t
Taylor, of Baltimore.
Among those from out of town at
tending the funeral were: Mrs. Hor
ace Frost, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Wotd,
