Biflwn, of Lake Junaliuska, announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Juanita Brown, to Mr. Rufutf Downs, son of the late Mrs. Lloyd Downs, which took place on Friday evening at 8 o'clock at the home of the bride's parents. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. B. H. Vestal, Moravian minister, of Winston-Salem. Members of the two families witnessed the ceremony. Mies Dorothy Greene, of Waynes ville, attended the bride. She wore a black crepe gown with contrasting accessories. The groom was attend tended by Mr. Henry Hooper, of Sau nook, as best man. The bride was attired in a brown wool ensemble with matching acces sories. Following the ceremony an informal reception was held, after which the couple left for a brief trip through the park and to points in Tennessee. Mr. Downs holds a position with the State Highway Commission, and is located in this section, where upon their return, the couple will reside. MRS. BOSTON TENDERED FARE WELL PARTY As a farewell courtesy to Mrs. G. F. Boston who leaves thts week for New Bern, where she will join Mr. Boston for the winter, a group of friends surprised her on Saturday evening, with a miscellaneous shower. Among those present were: Mrs. W. A. Rollins, Mrs. Theodore Mc Cracken, Mrs. R. S. Truesdale, Mrs. M. F. Albright, Mrs. W. S. Patterson, Mrs. J. E. Barr, Mrs. W. L. MiCraok en, Mrs. J. C. Rose, and Mrs C. B. Hosaflook. Mrs. Boston was presented with a number of lovely gift by those at tending, and other f riends. if ENGAGEMENT OF MISS FERGU SON AND MR. GREEN AN NOUNCED Wide social interest will be attach ed to the announcement made on Sat urday by General and Mis. Harley Bascom Ferguson, of New Orleans and Waynesville, of the engageemnt of their daughter, Miss Virginia Fergu son, to Mr. Otis Green, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Green, of Asheville. The wedding will take plae sometime around the middle of January. Owing to the fact that the Fergu sons have such a wide circle of rel atives and friends in Western North Carolina, and that the groom also be longs to a large Western Carolina family, the marriage will, be solemniz ed at St. Lawrence Catholic church in Asheville and will be a large fash ionable affair attended by many prom inent people from the state as well as elsewhere. Miss Ferguson is well known in Waynesville where she spends the summers with her family at the old Ferguson home, and has a host of friends here. She is a graduate of the Georgetown Visitation convent in Washington, D. C, and the Universi ty of North Carolina, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi fratern ity. Since finishing school she has been residing with her family in New Or leans. General Ferguson, outstanding in the engineering department of the United States Army, is at present president of the Missississippi River Commission and has for several years been in charge of engineering work on the Mississippi, where he maintains headquarters at Vicksburg, while the family have been living in New Or leans. Miss Fe-guson is the granddaugh ter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William B. Ferguson, beloved and prominent couple of Waynesville, and a grand niece of the the late Judge and Mrs. Garland S. Ferguson, and is a niece of Mr. Homer L. Ferguson, president of the Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Company, of Newport News. Mr. Green is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Green, of Asheville. lie was graduated at Riverside Mil ;:iry Academy of Gainesville, Ga., and from Duke University in the class of and is a member of the Karma Alpha fraternity. He was a member ' f the King'B Court of the Rhododen dron Festival in and in lll.'M, nrst gentleman .in. waiting', .and wa.i king in the l'Xif, festival. He is now regimental" colonel in the Roval Bri gade of guards of the Rhododendron Kingdom. Mr. Green is a me in her of the junior board of stewards of Central Meth odist church, a director in the Ashe ville Merchants association, secretary and treasurer of the Patton avenue corporation, and is also associated with his father in the Otis Green Hardware Company. 'His 'father is a former president of the Asheville Chamber of Commerce, and is widely known in the civic affairs of A'sheville. The bride is a graduate of the Rob ert Burns Hospital, of Chicago, and took post graduate work at the Char ity Hospital, of New Orleans. She is now a member of the nursing staff of the Haywood County Hospital, and has many friends in this section. The groom is a native of Tennessee, and has been connected with the Champion Fibre Company, of Canton, as a master machinist. The young couple will make their home in Waynesville. Miss France Robeson is a guest at the home of Miss Jessie Herren during the absence of her parents, Mr, and Mrs. K. J. Robeson, who are spending sometime in Newport News, Va., as the guests of their sons and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Robeson, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Robeson. PHONE 63 MUSIC CLUB HAS INTERESTING MEETING ON WEDNESDAY The November meeting of the Waynesville Music Club, which was changed from the Saturday following Thanksgiving, to Wednesday of this week, was held in the Welch Memorial u..:i.i: I t-..- Ti:i i L. ii , P" piiurcn, with Mrs. Lawrence Green and Mrs. Thomas Spurlock as associate hostess es. Mrs. Robert H. Stretcher, presi dent, presided. During the business session Mr. Charles Gulley, of the voice depart ment of the Western Carolina Teach ers College, gave the report of the recent district meeting held in Hen- dersonvijle. The members were much gratified over the selection of Mrs. Grover C. Wilkes, who was elected to succeed Mrs. William Ray Griffith as president of the district. The subject under study was Poly phonic Music, with Mrs. Grover C. Wilke as leader of the afternoon. Mrs. Wilkes gave an interesting out line of the various stages of poly phonic music from its earlist begin nings with two voices, down to its highest form. She discussed at length the music of Bach, who developed this form of music to its peak standard. At in tervals her talk was illustrated with numbers as follows: One of the earliest musical compo sitions written in the polyphonic style, "Summer Is I-cumen," was sung by a group of selected voicee from the Waynesville Choral Club, directed by Mr. Evander Preston. From the "Messiah," one of the greatest pieces of polyphonic music ever written, Mrs. Charles Gully sang two numbers, Mrs, hvander Preston played a Bach "Fugue" in C. Minor. Miss Virginia GustafsoQj teacher of violin at the Western Carolina Teachers College, gave two violin se lections, "Air on G. String by Bach, and two movements from Handel's Sonata in G. The Waynesville Choral Club gave several other greatly enjoyed num bers. Announcement was made that the next meeting would be held with Mrs. Lauriston Hardin, Jr., the Sat urday before Christmas and would be held in the evening with a Christmas program, RECENT BRIDE HONORED WITH 'PARTY - SATURDAY On Saturday evening Mrs. H. W. Hart, of Bryson City,. Mrs. Carolina ilyatt, and Miss Harte Oliver, enter tained with a linen shower, followed by contract, as a courtesy to Mrs. Howard Clapp, public health nurse, of Jilckson county, and recent bride. The affair was given in the lounge of the YVaynesvill-i Country Club, which was attractively arranged in Christinas greens.
