Legion Play Will Be Presented Tonight And Friday Night Drees rehearsal comments indicate that the show being presented tonigbt and Friday under the auspices of the American Legion will be more than successful for all concerned. Cast and committees have been working hard for the past week and the CIR CUS is expected to em-jrge tonight as a finished production. The show itself concerns the efforts of Bob Strong and his pal. Squeak Cloverly, to raise ten thousand dol lars by auctioning off their side show freaks and animals to Sir Peter Van Mildew, under pressure of Bob's un cle Zachanus Peabody, to whom the money must be turned over. A regular side show i put on dur ing the course of the show and va rious "'big top'' attractions. Amusing situations and ridiculously funny in cidents make this the comedy sensa tion of the season. Mr. Smathers has been for many years an outstanding leader, in the political and financial life of Hay wood county. He was a large proper ty owner, and has been one of the leading cattlemen in the county. lie had served .as-mayor of Clyde ftir 12 years, and was a member of the coun ty board of commissioners for two years. He served as a justice of the peace for some years, and was a mem ber of the school committee of Clyde for twenty-five years. His borne in Clyde is one of the most historical buildings in the coun ty, part of it having been erected by Jacob Shook in 1796, and while re modeled, in the third, story- still re mains the chapel where Bishop As- bury held services. He was the eon of Levi and Sallie Cook Smathers. In January. 1879, he was married to Miss Mattie Killian, who died in November, 1924. Always interested in his town and his county Mr. Smathers was liberal in his contribution to both charity and church work, and could always be counted upon for support of worthy causes. .-. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. J. H. Morgan, of Clyde", three sons, O. L. j W. G., and J. H. Smathers. all of Clyde; one sister, Mrs. Nancy Haynes; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
