Boyd, Jr., left by motor on Sunday for an extended trip through the West. Miss Mary Stringfield made a brief visit to friends in Roanoke, Va., and Clinton, S. C, during the past week. Lane entertained a group of friends with an informal tea, as a courtesy to Mrs. Anna Tackaberry, of New York City, who is the guest of Mrs. Mary Sauemnig. C CHAPTER The Haywood Chapter of the Unit ed Daughters of the Confederacy held the regular meeting with Mrs. Rufus H. Blackwell at Birchwood Hall on Friday afternoon, with a large mem bership present. The house was ar ranged throughout with a variety of spring nowers. The president, Mrs W. U McCracken, presided. Announcement was made regarding the decision of the county board of commissioners to allow the chapter to place the marker commemorating the last shot of the War Between the States, which was erected some years ago by the chapter, on the court house grounds. Mrs. L. M. Killian was ap pointed chairman to have charge of the removal and placing of the stone She will select the committee to serve with her. Mrs. C. F. Kirkpatrick stated that she had ordered application blanks for crosses of honor, to be sent to Mr. C M, Beal, of Canton, Mr. Hugh Abel, Mr. James R. Boyd, Jr., and Dr. N. M. Medford. Mrs. Frank Ferguson was appointed to serve as chairman of a finance group to raise funds for defraying the expenses of placing the marker on court house grounds. Papers of acceptance of member ship were presented to Mrs. S. L. Queen and the secretary instructed to extend an invitation. The chapter decided to place a copy of "Confederate Leader" by Sallie Dickinson, in the Waynesville Public Library. Mrs. R. N. Barber had the paner of the afternoon, "Texas Notables." Mrs. Barber gave much of the background of Texas history, displaying replicas of the six flags under which Texas has been ruled, and she gave the out standing citizens of the state, with particular attention given to the men who served in the War Between the States. Mrs. Frank Ferguson gave the pres ident general's message and reviewed the organization publication. During the sucial hour the hostess was assisted by Mrs. Ernest J. Hyatt. Meade, who has been spending the winter in South Carolina and Florida, has returned to town for the summer, and will oc cupy her house here for the season. While she is having some renova tions made, she is staying with Mr. and Mrs. John L. Davis. Mr. and Mrs. John Cudeback spent the week-end with the : latter's par ents at Mills River. Miss Edna and Miss Belle Bright had as their guests over the week-end, Miss May Roberts, of Shelby, and Miss Hazel Angel, of Mars Hill.
