North Carolina's 45,000 Junior Or
der members are approaching the an
ual convention of the order 2 months
hence with keen interest in the selec
tion of a state secretary. The late
Sam B. Vance, of Kernersville, held
the office for .'7 years, and the death
last January of this beloved official
left a vacancy that Ls to be filled at
the August convention of the order.
Friends of Mr. Coston declare him
t0 be one of the best equipped men in
the state for the office of state secre
tary. He is serving his third term as
register of deeds of Henderson county,
being thoroughly familiar with secre
tarial work and book-keeping meth
ods. Then his unquestioned integrity,
his high sense of honor, his consistent
Christian life, and his ability in sec
retarial work, his friends declare,
combine in making him the ideal man
for this place, and a most worthy suc
cessor to the beloved Sam B. Vance.
Mr. Coston is well known throughout
the state being song leader for many
years in the state conventions of the
Junior Order, and having been music
director in many revivals throughout
the state.
It is said that many local councils
of the Junior Order, as well as many
districts, have lined up for Mr. Cos
ton, and thus his election is already
assured.
"Country Store"
Museum Reputed
Worth $75,000
On a second floor, over a country
store, in McDowell county, is a"mu-
seum" reputed to be worth $75,000.
One of the finest of its kind in the
United States, it is the property of
E. F. Kirksey. He does not call it a
"museum," but simply a "collection
of Indian relics," which he has been
accumulating for more that 40 years
since he was a boy.
The majority of the relics came
from within a radius of 15 miles of
Mr. Kirksey's home, the choicest of
them uncovered by the Linville and
Catawba rivers, during the 1916 flood.
His most valuable article, Mr.
Kirksey says, is a ruby spaer head,
which he purchased from the Cher
okee Indians. He believes it to be
the largest ruby in the world. It meas
ures 5'L- inches in length and 2'z
inches wide. Another relic is a jew
eled serpent-head ring. This is
thought to be of Spanish origin.
Mule's Throat Cut
By Irritated Negro
A mule accused of stopping at the
command "giddap" and gaining ahead
on "whoa" bore knife wounds and a
negro was under arrest in Atlanta,
charged with using cold steel to cure
the animal's contrariness.
Patrolman H. C. Tuggle said the
negro, Willie Swift. 23, admitted us
ing his knife on the animal's neck
in a fit of exasperation.
L. V. Howard, owner of the mule
and employer of Swift, had the negro
arrested on a cruelty to animals
charge.

"Perfect Co-Ed"
The old adage that there is nothing
new under the sun was once more
proved during the last few weeks
when members of the House Agri
cultural committee listened to argu
ments in favor of a scheme which
Joseph in Biblical times suggested as
a remedy for the recurring scarcity
of food in the land of Egypt. The
new farm control bill embodies in its
essence the principle of making pro
visions for the lean years during the
fat ones. Seeking t0 carry out the
President's often-expressed desire to
protect producers and consumers
from excessively low or high prices,
and yet at the same time to insure an
ample supply of crops at all times,
the bill contains many provisions.
