Nation's Deficit Reaches New High Ever since the United States Gov ernment lowered the dollar by rais ing the price of gold it has been the world's chief customer for gold at the statutory rate of $H5 the ounce. last week the treasury went on the market t0 borrow another $8011,(100,00(1 part ly to provide funds for buying more gold. The loan brought the govern ment to the new high level 200, 000,000. The monetary gold stocks of the United States are more than $1L',000,000,000. To prevent inflation of credit the treasury has sought to "sterlize" its excess gold by putting it into an "inactive account." Last week Senator Thomas, ()f Oklahoma, a member of the cheap-money-bloc in Congress, introduced a bill authorizing the treasury to issue currency against all its sterlized holdings.
