MRS. HARRY MARSHALL GIVES
LUNCHEON FOR COUSINS
A delightful affair of Thursday was
the luncheon given by Mrs. Harry
Marshall at her home on the Ashe
ville Road. The house was, arranged
in garden flowers in brilliant shades.
Mrs. Marshall has recently com
pleted the restoration of the old
home of her parents, the late Dr.
and Mrs. Samuel Love.

section. She is the wife of the late
ConuTossman W. T. Crawford, promi
nent attorney of the state, who rep
resented this district in Congress for
many years, hhe is the daughter ot
the late Mr. and Mrs. James Coman,
of Tuscola, now known as Lake Jun-
iluska.
She has been active with the civic,
religious, and social atfairs of this
section for many years, even with her
irjje family and household responsi
bilities sne has always lound time to i
contribute generously to public obliga
tions.

Hilary Crawford,, of San Francisco,
Captain Harry Crawford, of the U. S.
Army, Mr. Walter Crawford, attorney

On Saturday evening Mrs. Mary
Sauemhig entertained with a dinner
party as a farewell courtesy to Miss
Ann Jones, who will leave the first of
next month for Nashville. Term..

months with her nephew.
For the occasion the house was ar
ranged in bowls of fall flowers. The
table was centered with a bowl of
mixed Mowers. During the evening
Mrs. Sauemnig presented Miss Jones
with an attractive bag as a parting
gift.

WOMAN'S CLUB HOLDS FIRST
MEETING OF YEAR
The initial meeting of the Woman's
Club for the current club year was
held on Thursday afternoon in the
assembly rooms of the American Le
gion home, with Mrs. Dan Watkins,
president, presiding.
Other officers for the ensuing year
are, first vice president, Mrs. Ben
Colkitt, second vice president, Mrs.
James W. Killian, third vice president,
j Mis. C. F. Kirkpatrick, recording sec
! retary, Mrs. Felix Stovall, correspond
I ing secretary, Mrs. James Harden
Howell, and treasurer, Mrs. K. H
Blackwell. The principal ieature ot the after
noon was the talk by Mrs. W. H.
Davis, of Asheville, chairman of music
in the State Federation of Women's
clubs, who spoke on "The Origin of
Mountain Songs." Mrs. Davis stress
ed the importance music in the
schools. She traced the history of
mountain music, playing several se
lections illustrating the points made.
She complimented Miss Margaret
Stringfield, local composer. She spoke
of "Kidder Cole," writaen by Judge
F. E, Alley. She was assisted on the
program by Mrs. D. T. Lann, of Ashe
ville, who sang a group of songs.
During the business session the
chairman of the committees gave re
ports of their summer activities.
. Mrs. J. Harden Howell stated that
the f'l'llnwing had been invited to join
the club: Mrs. Joe Miller, Mrs. Roy
Smithwick, Mrs. F. E. O'Farrell, Mrs.
Francis Massie, Mrs. Whitener Pre
vost, Mrs. Ernest MeCiacken, Miss
Martha Mock, and Miss Margaret
Ashton.
A letter was read from Mrs. Rueck,
of Bryson City, director of the district,
inviting the club to attend the 'district
meeting to be held in Bryson City on
October 2nd, Mrs, H..W. Baucom was
elected as a delegate to represent the
club.

distributed the year books, Mrs, Frank

The annual meeting of the Mis
sionary Society of the Baptist church
was held on Tuesday evening at the
home of Mrs. R. N. Barber. The
Business Women's Circle had charge
of the program, and the Helen Bagby
Circle served as hostess of the even

On Thursday evening Mrs. Roy
Campbell assembled a group of
friends for a game of contract as a
courtesy to her sister, Mrs. J. Frank
Hodges, of Hiwassee Dam, who has
been her guest. Purple and gold
made an attractive color motif.
When the scores were totaled Miss
Diana Black was found to hold the
top score, and Mrs. C. M. Dicus the
