Gandhi Honored On His
Sixty-Kifjhth Birthday
India marked the sixty-eighth bir
thday of Mohandas K. Gandhi on Oc-
tober the 2nd with nation-wide mass
meetings and the launching of a pro-1
hibition campaign. Prayers were of-!
fered beseeching deities to enable the'
ascetic leader to head a final despe
rate campaign for India's "freedom.",
Mr., Candhi, we.ik following an ill-
ness, took, no active part in the cele-'
brations but received greetings from
all over the world.
The State Supreme Court, holding
that drunkenness offers no excuse for
a motorist whose car is involved in
' a fatal crash, likened such a defense
i to that of a young man who contrib
I uted to the death of his parents, but
j later pleaded with the court to be mer
ciful to him because he was an orphan.
The tribunal refused to upset two
, judgments for $15,000 against Albert
' J.'.' Boggs. of Marianna. He pleaded
i he had "passed out" on the rear seat
of his car in which he and Robert
Peacock had been riding and drink
ing. .Mr. t'eacflcK was given im
plied consent" to operate the vehicle,
the court said.'- Mrs. B. C. Butler
was killed and Henry C, Whittle in
jured in a erah which followed.
