necting link between the parkway
and the main highways in the val
leys. Besides the work on the road the
CCC boys have devoted much time to
forestry work, and roadside beauti
fication. The order came for the camp to be
vacated after it was decided in
Washington that 131. camps in the
nation would have to be demobilized in
order to reduce the number to 1,500.
There are two camps in the Pisgah
National Forest and for this reason,
the Sunburst camp was ordered to
move. The buildings will remain in
tact, even if the move is made.
It has been suggested that a spur
camp will be established at Sunburst,
and that about half the present num
ber of men would be maintained there
in the spring. Civil leaders here
pointed out, however, that a half
crew would take more than twice as
long to complete the road to the top
of the mountain and that there is
every need for speed on the project.
To date no decision has been re
ceived altering the original orders.
Olin Sanders, captain of the guards at the state penitentiary at
Columbia, S. C. was slain by six convicts when they barricaded
themselves in his office, and held him as hostage in a futile attempt
to escape. Despite pleas of Gov. Olin Johnston, who stood outside
the office and argued with the desperadoes, they fatally stabbed
Sanders and surrendered only when troops were called in.
