THE MOUNTAINEER'S PORT PAG Completely Covering flLANTri The Local Sports Field 5 ON PORT MAIUOX BRIDGES f you did not get the chance to attend the Donkey Ball game, you missed the show of your life. It was the biggest sports show that has come to Waynesville in many a day. And outside of the donkeys, it was made up entirely of local talent. To begin with the stadium filli-d to capacity with fans roared with laughter the whole iho o-mme was in nroirress. It o ' was that time just goes to show that the people 01 mis community still like to get a good laugh once and a while, and believe me, there were plenty of laughs. I did not know that we had so many horsemen in our midst. On several occasions it looked like the ball game was going to be turned into an old fashioned rodeo like they used to have in the wild west. With sev eral of the players demonstrating jtheir skill at handling a bucking mule. Page 1 Edited By Marion T. Bridges THURSDAY, JULY? 38 Men And Beast Thrill Throng At Base J5all First Donkey Base Ball Game Goes Over With A Bang So Did Some Players lennis Helens Meet Again If anyone was suffering from a grouch or was the least bit soured on the world, his troubles were soon for gotten and his laugh rang out with the crowd. It is to be commended the sports manship that was demonstrated by each player of the two teams in car rying out their duty to support their team. It is very seldom that as many sports are found in a communi ty as small as our own. It has been proven by the number of people that attended the game that this is a community that likes fun and excitement, and without a doubt some form of entertainment should be provided for them in the nature of ball games and other sports. Quite a few of the players showed their ability to play ball even if they riid have to straddle a donkey to get to first base, which they seldom did. Why not organize several teams of softball? It can be played by all, young and old, large or small, and is an interesting game with the dan gers of baseball removed. There are several prospects in the making for several more teams to be organized. If you have a team al ready in the making it will not be hard to find another team with which to play. The American Legion Bob Cats managed to nose out the Hazelwood Tom Cats in a game of donkey base ball on the local athletic field Tues day night with the new stadium pack ed with cheering and laughing fans from far and near, by the score of 5 to 4. This is the first donkey ball game romniurntv and Ut i)tuf.v w was sponsored by the local post of the American Legion. From all appearances the donkeys were as good at the game as some ol the players. All the players were perched atop a donkey with the exception of the pitcher, catcher and the battel', and one of the best parts of the game for untrained players was that they bat ted until a fair ball was hit, then astride a donkey, had to ride to first base. It seems that the old saying, "He didn't get to first base," must have originated in a donkey ball game, loi thai, was the case most ol the time. One of the donkeys that was used to un the bases did not like to have players on his back and numerous times left the men on the ground. Another donkey would lay down and refuse to rise. The game was one of the best sport ing events that has been witnessed in Waynesville in a long time. In connection with the ball game was a donkey derby with Jane Stents, .lane Walker, Emily Slier , ilasemne Swift, Corinne Alley, and Mary Kuntz acting as jockeys, Emily biier won the box of candy offered as first prize, and Hasoltine Swift took sec ond place, which was a sofa pillow.
