BRIDE HONORED WITH SHOWEH
ON TUESDAY
Mrs. Karl Caldwell, the former Miss
N'ina Wright, was given a miscella
neous shower on Tuesday afternoon
by her mother, Mrs. H. L. Wright,
and Miss Helen Medford as associate
hostess, at the home of the former.
TV, liviny room was attractively
arranged in quantities of marigolds
and zinnias in vivid fall colors. 1 ne
afternoon was featured by games,
including several rounds of bingo in
which useful and attractive prizes
were given the winners.
The guest list included, Mrs. Earl

has leased the residence of Mr. and
Mrs. H. C. Lindsley on Pigeon street

ville and has many friends who will
be interested in her stay here.

Mrs. E. B. Camp has returned from
Blacksburg, Va., where she visited
her sister, Mrs. Otto Buekhart.
Miss Theodosia Flud, supervisor of
nursing in the district health depart
ment, has returned after a fortnight's
visit to friends in Fayetteville and
points in Virginia and South Carolina.
She was accompanied home by her
mother , Mrs. E. D. Flud, of Sumter,
S. C, who will make her an extended
visit. .

Tuscaloosa, Ala., were the guests last
week of their uncle and cousin, Mr.

Mrs. Charles, Harper McDowell has
announced the marriage of her daugh
ter, Marion Bradford to Octave
Schnurer.
The wedding was solemnized Mon
day afternoon at 5 o'clock at the
home of the bride's sister, Mrs. J.
Franklin Williams on Avery avenu-'
and was witnessed by members of the
immediate families. The home was
decorated with a profusion of pretty
summer flowers and in the living room
where the vows were spoken pink
gladioli and ferns were used.
Immediately after the wedding Mrs.
McDowell, mother of the bride, who
makes her home with Mrs. Williams,
entertained at a wedding supper in
honor of the biide and bridegroom
and those attending the wedding. The
dining room was decorated with the
bridal motif of white and green and
a beautiful wedding cake was used
as the central decoration of the table.
Following the supper and cutting of
the wedding cake Mr. and Mrs.
Schnurer left by automobile for Nor
folk, Va., where they took a boat for
the New England coast.
The bride is a daughter of Mrs.
McDowell ami the late Dr. McDowell,
of WayuesvMk'. For her wedding she
wore an attractive costume of blue
with matching accessories and a cor-
j sage of valley lilies. She i sa grad
l uate of Women's College of the Uni
J versity of North Carolina where she
j was outstanding in student activities
being a member of the Phi Beta Kappa
and Alpha Kappa Delta societies.
After her graduation she was award
ed a two year fellowship to study at
the University of Pittsburgh for her
masters degree in social work, doing
her field work with the Family So
ciety of Pittsburgh. .
Mr. Schnurer is a graduate of Car
negie '1 ech at Pittsburgh. He is an
engineer in the mam office of Carnegie
Illionis Steel company. lie is also
active in musical circles of Pitts
burgh, serving as secretary ot the
musical society of Pittsburgh.
Mr. and Mrs. Scnurer will make
their home in Pittsburgh after their
wedding trip.
Out-of-town guests here lor the
wedding were Miss Anna Schnurer, of
Pittsburgh, sister ot the bridegroom
and Gladstone McDowell, of Raleigh,
brother of the bride. News-Herald.

Mrs. R. C. Chambers observed her
fifty-ninth birthday anniversary on
Sunday at noon at her home in Iron
Duff. A picnic lunch was serv
ed on the lawn, after which Mrs.
Chambers was presented with many
beautiful gifts by those in attendance.
The guest list included Mr. and
Mrs. F. B. Chambers and two children,
Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Durden and small
daughter, of Asheville, Mr, and Mrs.
Wayne Medford and seven children,
of Clyde, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cham

HAYWOOD CHAPTER TO HOLD
INITIAL MEETING SOON
The Haywood chapter of the United
Daughters of the Confederacy will
hold the initial meeting of the year
1938-39 on Friday afternoon, Sep
tember the second, at the home of
Mrs. W. F. Swift.
Mrs. O. R. Martin will have the
paper, her subject being: "Admiral
Semmes." The president, Mrs. W. L.
McCracken, will preside. All mem
bers are urged to attend this first
meeting.
Mrs. Mary Hawk, of Taylorsville,
spent the week-end in town with
friends.
Miss Helen Coffey, senior and Miss
Miss Ruth Coffey, freshman, left Sun
day for Jefferson City, Tenn., where
they will enter Carson-Newman Col
lege for the fall semester.

turned home after a visit to friends
