TOWN OF HAZELWOOD A special election will be held in the Town of Hazelwood at the usual polling places on the 20th day of September, 1938, at which time there will be submitted to the voters of the Town of Hazelwood for their approv al an ordinance heretofore adopted, authorizing Thirty-six Thousand, Five Hundred Dollars bonds for eontsruct ing and laying a sewer line, including the acquisition of right-of-way. That bonds of the Town of Ha zelwood shall be issued to the max imum aggregate principal amount of THIRTY-SIX THOUSAND, FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS for construct ing and laying a sewer line, including the acquisition of rights-of-way. 2. That a tax sufficient to pay the prinicpal and interest of the bonds shall be annually levied and col lected. 3. A statement of the debts of the Town has been filed with the Clerk and is open fbr inspection. 4. That this ordinance shall take effect when approved by the voters of the Town of Hazelwood at an clcc tion to be held as provided in the Municipal Finance Act. The foregoing ordinance was pass ed on the 23rd day of August, 1938, and was first published on the 25th day of August, 1938. Jonathan is much concerned over the traffic con ditions on Main Street ... he says if we are to become a resort town . . . . even for a part of the year ... we will have to take steps to get traffic jams corrected ... or the tourist driv ing through town ... will continue on his way ... he cited one resort town he visits . . . that has a ruling . . . that is strictly kept . . . that no local person can park his car on Main Street . . , but it is left clear through the sason for the tourist . . . not a bad idea . . . which naturally brings up that much agitated ques tion of a back alley . . . and its use fulness ... we would hate some day to see the highway diverted to some side street . . . just think the visitors might not see our pride and joy . , . the stately building of our Haywood County Court house ... that gives (at least we think) such an air to the village. . . . Cole Elected To Succeed Dave Cabe As President Of Organization Gordon Grey, of Winston-Salem, nominee for representative of For syth county, in the coming election, told the members of the Young Dem ocratic club of Haywood county, at their annual convention held here on Thursday night in the Masonic Tem ple that it was imperative that the young Democrats of the state perfect their ranks in organized working forces, in order to meet the aims of the group and hold up the prestige of the clubs in the state. Other speakers on the program in cluded, M. G. Stamey, W. R. Francis, W. G. Byers. Chester Cogburn, C. E Brown and Mrs. Doyle Alley. Dave Cabe, retiring president, presided during the business session and Wil liam Medford served as toastmaster at the banquet. Crom E. Cole, of Canton, was elect ed to succeed Mr. Cabe as presiden of the club, with the following elected to serve with him: Mrs. R. W. Noland of Clyde, first vice president, Mrs. W G. Byers, second vice president, Miss Sarah Woody, of Canton, third vice president, Mrs. Caroline Ashton Hyatt, secretary, and James Hender son, Jr., of Canton, treasurer. The following township chairmen were appointed, with others to be an nounced later: Waynesville, Kermitt Purcell; Bc.-iverdam. Ayward Blay lock; Clyde, Lowry Cagle. The Haywood Baptist Association met for their 5:;rd annual session for a two-day meet on Wednesday and Thursday, August the 24th and 25th, at the Spring Hill Baptist church in the Henson Cove. The meeting was one of the most successful in the his tory of the association, with more that four hundred persons in attend ance on the first day. The Rev. Frank Leatherwood, who has served the organization as moder ator for the past year was re-elected to the office. Others elected to serve with the Rev. Leatherwood were:, the Rev. R. P. McCracken, re-elected to the office of vice-moderator; W. M. Gerald, pastor of the Clyde Baptist church, clerk; J. R. Morgan, re-elect-id as historian; the Rev. P.C. Hicks, pastor of the East End Baptist church, of Canton, treasurer. The Rev. J. S. Hopkins, pastor of the Waynesville Baptist church was selected to preach the introductory sermon at the next meeting. M. A. Huggins, secretary of the k?orth Carolina Baptist convention, was the principal speaker of the first day. Mr. Huggins spoke of the achievements of the state group dur ing the past year, and discussed some of the aims of the coming year. He stressed the increase in contributions of the current year, stating that they represented a large percentage over last year. Mr. Huggins spoke of the extensive evangelistic program, which is be ing planned over a period of five years for the Southern Baptist con vention and asked that each local church participate in this great evangelistic movement. J. A. McMillian, of Thomasville, editor of Charity and Children, the official publication of the Baptist Or phanage, of Thomasville, spoke on Thursday morning. The Rev. M. A. Adams, represent ing the United Dry Forces of North Carolina, outlined the temperance pro gram of the organization, and urged the co-operation of the church in the fight against alcohol. W. D. Up shaw, former Congressman, also ad dressed the group on temperance, making one of the most interesting talks during the two-day session.
