As the park officials would not allow any expansion and they felt their business warranted more accommodations, last year Mr. and Mrs. Alexander gave up the lease with an idea of owning their own ranch. From early spring until late in the fall the ranch was one of the most popular resorts in this section for tourists. Most of the guests were from the middle West and the East. The Cataloochee ranch was chosen as headquarters for the Wilderness Pack Trip of the American Forest Asso ciation, last year the only trip of its kind taken by the group in the East ern part of America, the others being made in the West. Owing to favor ubh climatic conditions here, two such trips were made last year by the group, one in June and another in September, while in the West only one trip a year is feasible in the centers chosen. The two trips of last year con sumed twelve days, with two spent at the ranch on arriving and leaving and the other ten in the forests. They took with them H2 horses, 20 to ride and 12 for pack horses for their pro visions and camp equipment. The group has communicated with Mr. Alexander about trips for next season. Mr. Alexander brings to this new development a wide experience. He is a native of Georgia, and trained in forestry. He spent 6 years in the United States .Forest service, first as ranger, and then junior forester and later as district supervisor of the Southeastern states.
