The regular monthly meeting of the
Fines Creek home demonstration club
met last Thursday with an all-day
meeting at the home of Mrs. Way

charge of the meeting. The following

"What Does the Farm Family
Read?" Mrs. Linwood Frahl.
Miss Smith gave a demonstration
on canning. '
Ah hour of recreation was enjoyed
by all, after which the meeting ad
journed to meet in October with Mrs.
B. G. O'Brien.

MRS. MILLIE L. DUCKETT
Funeral services were held on Sun
day at 2:30 o'clock at the Jarrett
cemetery, Asheville, for Mrs. Millie
Louise Duckett, 85, who died on Fri
day at the Haywood County Hospital.
The Rev. Grice, officiated.
Mrs. Duckett was the widow of the
late W. C. Duckett and formerly re
sided in this county.
Surviving are the following: Six
daughters, Mrs. Alice Miller, of Weav
erville, Mrs. Jul;a Wrigwt, of Marion,
Mrs. Eliza Wright, of Fairview, Mrs.
Martha Smathers, of Washington, D.
C, Mrs. Mildred Huntley, of Fletcher,
Mrs. Maud Cantrell, of Traveler's
Rest, S. C, and two sons, J. W.
Duckett, of Canton and J. M. Duckett,
of Greenville.

Born November 16, 1865, Mr. Welch
was the son of the late Dr. Robert
Vance and Mary Caroline Peeples
Welch. He attended the local school
after which he graduated from the
Poughkeepsie Bjusftiess College, of
Poughkeepsie, N, Y.
He was prominent in the political
affairs of the county for a half cen
tury, though never running for an
office until 1926 when he was elected
sheriff. He served until l'J30 and
again as sheriff from 1934 to 36, and
was tax collector from 1930 to 1934
He was a modest and unassuming
person, with a great interest in
people. His charities were county
wide, and those in need always found
him a friend.
He was married in 1900 tu Miss
Fannie Boyd, of Jonathan Creek,
daughter of the late Frank and Sarah
Parks Boyd.
Mr. Welch is survived by his widow,
two daughters, Mrs. Jack Felmet and
Miss Sarah Welch, the latter a student
at Western Carolina Teachers Col
lege, three sons, Robert V. Welch,
present sheriff of Haywood county,
Dr. Julius C. Welch, Jr., member of
the staff of the Children's Hospital,
of Los Angeles, Calif., and Joseph H.
W. Welch, of Waynesville, One sister,
Mrs. J. Howell Way and two grand
children, Betty Felmet and Fannie
Llmda Welch, also survive.
A special program of music by the
church choir will be given on Sunday
evening at the regular 7:30 service, at
the First Methodist church under the
direction of J. Dale Stentz, with Mrs.
W. L. Matney organist.
The program will open with an or
gan prelude by Mrs. Matney, followed
by congregational singing of request
numbers, with prayer by the pastor,
the Rev. J. G, Huggin, Jr.
Other numbers include: "When the
Golden Leaves Are Falling," by Ha
vens, with Lester Poteate and Tom
Davis as soloists; quartet, "Show Me
My Task," by Jane Stentz; solo, "The
Publican," by J. Dale Stentz; anthem,
"Savior Like a Shepard Lead Us," by
choir, with Lester Poteate as soloist;
duo, "Whispering Hope," by Mrs.
Fred Martin and Mrs. Fred Calhoun;
anthem, "Jesus Lover of My Soul,"
with Eva Leatherwood, Mrs. Fred
Martin and Tom Davis as soloists.
COUNTY AGENTS COLUMN
Haywood county has been designat
ed by the state AAA officials as one
of three counties in North Carolina to
use ground agricultural limestone
under the provisions of the 1938 Soil
Conservation program. Orders for
1800 tons of ground limestone have
been submitted to the county agent's
office as of Tuesday, September 20.
Persons having work sheets under
the 1938 Soil Conservation program
may take up 80 per cent or less of
their 1938 soil building payment in
ground limestone. For each ton of
lime used under this provision $2 is
taken from the payment earned. No
outlay of cash is necessary other than !
