The business session was featured
by the annual reports of the officers
and the chairmen. Mrs. Frank Fer
guson, chairman of the square dance
committee, stated that the affair was
a success, both financially and so
cially. The registrar stated that she was
taking the scrap book compiled by
Bttty Gene Alley and the roster
compiled by Mis. Will A. Hyatt with
her to the state convention to be put
on display there.
Miss Mary Stringfield was elected
to membership in the chapter.
It was announced that the follow
ing would attend the state convention,
which is being held in New Hern thi

DESSERT PARTIES
Mrs. John N. Shoolbred was hos
tess of two delightful affairs this
week when she assembled friends on
Wednesday and Thursday afternoons
for contract. On both occasions the
residence was arranged in quantities
of dahlias and late fall flowers. The
guests arrived at 2:30 and were
served a sweet course, which was fol
lowed by several progressions of con
tract. Mrs. C. F. Kirkpatrick was the win
ner of the top score and Mrs. White
ner Prevost won the low score prize
at the party on Wednesday.

LARGE AFFAIR HONORS BRIDE
OF NOVEMBER
The largest affair of the fall sea
son was the contract party given on
Thursday afternoon at the Hotel
Gordon by Miss Mildred Crawford,
Mrs. Whitener Prevost and Mrs.
Ralph Prevost as a courtesy to Miss
Mary Stringfield, bride-elect of next
month. The lounge and parlors
where the games were enjoyed were
decorated in vases of flowers with
shades of yellow and orange, predom
inating. When the cards were put away Mrs.
J. P. Dicus held the high and Mrs.
J. Harden Howell the low. The bride-
elect was presented a lovely pair of
framed flower prints.

a contract party and a miscellaneous
shower, on Thursday night at the
home of Mrs. Charles E. Ray.
Hostesses of the affair were Mrs.
Charles E. Ray, Jr., Miss Helen Ray,
and Muss Frances Ray. Fall flowers
in rich and brilliant shades were used
throughout the house. Mrs. Charles
E. Ray assisted her daughters in re
ceiving the guests.

score and Miss Babbie Way cut the'
consolation. The honor guest was

was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Martin from 4 to 6 o'clock in the
afternoon and from 8 to 9:30 o'clock
in the evening. No formal invita-1
tions were issued, but friends and
relatives of the couple called during
the hours to offer their felicitations
on the happy event.
Hosts of the affair were the eight
children of Mr. and Mrs. Martin and
their wives and husbands, as follows:

Mrs. Martin, the bride of fifty years
ago, wove a gown of King's blue
crepe, with chiffon and cut velvet
sleeves, and her flowers were a cor
sage of yellow roses and gypsophellia.
In the afternoon, Miss Nancy Kil
lian greeted the guests at the en
trance. The receiving line was form
ed in the living room made up of the
members of the family. Mrs. Mar
garet McCorkle, of Asheville, presid
ed in the dining room and was assisted
by Miss Frances Robeson, Mrs. Bon
ner Ray, and Mrs. Roy Martin.

received at the front floor. Mrs. Mc

Mr. and Mrs. Martin were married I

Mr. Martin held his first position
here, upon his arrival m IHSlI, with
the Waynesville Woolen Mills. Pol'
several years he was connected in
business with the late (;. E. Raw In
1905 he established his own business,
retiring m 19.10.

showing the high esteem in which
Mr. and Mrs. Martin are held in the

The Waynesville alumnae of Wo
man's College of the University of
North Carolina met at the home of
Miss Lois Harold, on Tuesday evening,

Miss Harriet Boyd as associate hos
tesses. The meeting was called for
the purpose of celebrating the 46th
anniversary of the founding of the
college. Mrs. M, G. Stamey, local
chairman, presided.
The meeting opened with the sing
ing of the college song, and the read
ing of a club ritual written by an
alumnae. Mrs, Stamey briefly re
viewed the important events of last
commencement, showing pictures of
interesting persons and scenes on the
campus. She announced that a hand
woven luncheon set made by an
alumna, Mrs. Elizabeth McCracken
Medford and sent as a gift to Alumna
house public acknowledged in the
Alumnae Day report, during the com-

ican Legion and Auxiliary will be
held next Tuesday evening at 7:30
in the assembly rooms of the Legion
home. Mrs. J. Harden Howell and

the adjournment of each group.
Mrs. Bonner Ray and her sister,
Mrs. Jessie McCracken Foster, of
Rock Hill, leave today for Hot
Springs, Ark,, where they will spend
a fortnight.

tion bee brought all alumnae up to
date on happenings at the college, and
many delightful reminiscences were
exchanged. One of the early gradu
ates present at the meeting was Dr.
Isabelle Brown Funk, member of the
class of 1899.
New officers elected for the coming
year were: Chairman, Miss Evelyn
Underwood, vice chairman, Mrs. W. C.
Medford, and secretary, Miss Harriet
Boyd.
Mr. and Mrs. Hilliard Matney and
children, accompanied by the former's
mother, Mrs. W. L. Matney, are vis
iting Mr. and Mrs. Lee Matney in
Westwood, N. J. While in the North
Mrs. Hilliard Matney will also visit
her parents at their home in Dor
chester, Mass.
