Camp Dellwood opened on June 26,
for a preliminary season particularly
for training staff members. There
were a number of campers who ern
rolled for that period who transfer
red into the regular camp season
which opened on July 1. This year
the program differs from that of
last summer in several respects. First
in that much more emphasis is placed
upon hiking, overnight camping trips,
and as the Dellwood boys have come
to call such a program a life of
"Roughing it." One of the high
lights of this season will be a live
day expedition into the Smoky Moun
tains. At noon on Wednesday, July
19, the entire camp will leave for
Catlinburg, Tennessee, and will es
tablish a base camp at a point about
six miles from Catlinburg.
During the stay in the Smoky Park,
the party will hike to Moun- LeConte,
climb the Chimney Tops, follow the
Appalachian Trail from Indian Gap
to Siler's Bald, and explore other
areas. Each night the various par
ties will return to the base camp. On
other occasions there will be free
periods when the parties will be Al
lowed to use their time as they wish.
Several staff members will accom
pany the party, and complete super
vision of all activities will be made
by them. There are boys coming
from Little Rock, Ark., Mt, Airy
and Asheville, San Ant,onio, Tex.,
and Cleveland, Ohio, to make the trip
into the Smokies.
During the periods of horseback
riding the instructor also teaches the
care and feeding of horses. All the
campers seem interested in this phase
of work.
Very soon after the opening of
camp an organization known as a pre
siding officer of the entire camp,
known as "Mayor," and a represen
tative from the various groups and
two members from the staff. The
campers have formulated their own
policies, rules, and regulations. Vio
lations of these regulations are im
mediately brought to the attention
of the Mayor and when the camp
court convenes each Monday morn
ing, the cases are tried. As nearly
as possible the campers are made to
realize that the camp is theirs,
therefore, the rules and regulations
which they formulate are more care
fully observed.
Through out the season the relig
ious side of a camper's life is not
neglected. Each evening just before
taps devotions are held in the va
rious buildings and on Sunday af
ternoons an impressive worship ser
vice is held in the attractive out
door chapel known as "The-Chapel-In-The-Dfell;tf
these four 'ofctock ser
vices are open to the public.
At nine o'clock on the night of the
30th of July, an impressive moon
light service will be observed in the
chapel. During the camp season on
the nights when the moon is full the
moonlight services are conducted this
year. Should the night of the 30th be
rainy, the service will be postponed
to the night of the 31st, at the same
hour. Visitors have a cordial invita
tion to attend the moonlight service
Anyone desiring to visit Camp
Dellwood on Sundays, may have Sun
day dinner at l p. m. in the camp din
inff room with the camners. . The
Sunday dinners may be had for 60c j
per plate. Reservations should be
made in advance,

mission Visiting In Town
Garland S. Ferguson, of Washing
ton, D. C, native of Waynesville,
chairman of the United States Trade
Commission, is spending a fortnight
in this section as the guest of his
brother-in-law and sister, Profound
Mrs. E. J. Robeson. ,
Mr. Ferguson is the son of the late
Judge and Mrs. G. S. Ferguson, and
spent his childhood and early man
hood in Waynesville.
COURT TO DELAY DIVORCE AU
THORIZED IN CALIFORNIA
Governor Culbert L. Olsen, of Cal
ifornia, has signed a bill setting up in
Los Angeles, a "children's court of
conciliation' wher a mother or
father may delay a divorce by the
other spouse and confer with ex
perts in an attempt at agreement.
Judge Ben B. Linsdsey, author of the
; bill says it is "the beginning of a
- constructive revolution in the entire
problem of divorce." The bill sets
up a new department of the Supe
rior Court and provides for the of
fice of a conciliator and three as

The strike of skilled men working
on 1940 models in General Motors
plants resulted in violence early last
week at Pontiac, Mich. State police
moved into Pontiac for strike duty,
and there wag talk of a general strike.
The General Motors men had been
called out by the CIO United Auto
Workers because of the company's
refusal to negotiate. And the com
pany had refused because of the con
flict between the CIO and the AFL
branches of the union.
