hostess on Friday of a luncheon
as a courtesy to her juest, Mrs.
Ernest Carlisle, of Griffin, Ga.,
The party was given at the Hotel
Gordon. The guest were seated
at one long table centered with an
arrangement of garden flowers.
Following luncheon several spir

joyed. When the scores were total

graduated from the University of
North Carolina. She was promi
nently identified with the North
Carolina Playmakers during her
student days at the University and
has accepted a position to teach in
this department next year. Miss
Wood is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. R. E. Wood, of Elizabethton,
her mother, the former Miss Annie
Shoolbred.

Sponsor Square Dance
At Gordon Tonight
The ways and means committee
of the Woman's Club will sponsor
a square danee tonight at the Gor
don Hotel. A well known local
dancer will call the figures.
Dancing will begin at 9 o'clock,
and a small admission charge will
be made at the door.
These dances which will be fea
tured at intervals during the sum
mer by the club, have attracted a
large numbers of both local people
and visitors, and a good crowd Is
anticipated for the affair tonight

In discussing the present con
dition of the bank with assistant
cashier, James T. Noland, last
night, it was learned that there
was a big increase in the volume
of business the bank was doing
over the same period of last year,
and that the total resources of the
bank were the largest ever known
at this season of the year, the in
crease over last year amounting to
$202,000. !
J. II. Way, Jr., cashier and vice
president, stated that last year dur
ing the same period there had been
1039 loans made and renewed in
comparison to 2,500 of this year.
The average loan of the bank
amounts to $81.12.
The First National Bank having
a surplus equal to its capital is on
the honor roll list which is publish
ed by the comptroller of the cur
rency in Washingtcm, Being a na
tional bank it is obligatory that the
institution be a member of the
Federal Deposit Insurance Corpo
ration which insures each deposit
to a miximum of $5,000.
Officers of the bank are, Jonathan

The 25th annual meeting of the
Haywood Baptist Woman's Mis
sionary Union was held at the
First Baptist church in Canton on
Friday with Mrs. E. C. Horton, the
associational superintendent, pre
siding. Seventy persons, repre
senting the seven churches in the
county were in attendance.
The program for the meeting
was based on the theme, "The
Firm Foundation," and was open
ed with the hymn, "How Firm a
Foundation." The Rev. W. M.
