SAM COX OH YES, THEY WILL GET Joe, and I reckon he wanted BLACKIE TOMORROW Story 52 Yon have seen lots of folks that were always going to do something "tomorrow." And you have also had you mother or your daddy or your teacher tell you that "to morrow never comes. Always it it "today." But "today," the nearest Mr, Man and the other hunters came to play a joke on hira. Anyway he turned loose another one of those "Uh-ur-r-r-r" noises that scared Uncle Joe's paralysis clear out of him, and he turned around to run back into the house. Just then Bully jumped at Uncle Joe and butted him right into a big fig bush that was near the house. Uncle Joe made about as much noise as Bull Calf had made, and to getting Blackie Bear was to hear Bully bellowed once more, kicked up some more about some tracks that "'a tt,'u ran away lowa "somebody" had seen "somewhere" the barn- whlle Uncle Joe Picked that looked like bear tracks. And flm, self 0UA of the fig tree and ran Blackie Bear was just like "tomor row;" he didn't show up. Day after day they hunted for Blackie, and day after day they all came back home with some sort of an excuse for not bringing his hide or a quarter of his meat, un back in his house and slammed the door to keep Blackie Bear out. You know Rover Dog lived with Mr. Man, and Rover's puppy had stayed over at Uncle Joe's house ever since Howler left. I think the puppy was either tired or just homesick and wanted to stay all night with his daddy. Any way he did stay, and Uncle Joe, thinking that he had gone ahead, didn't miss him until he got home. This calf's name was "Bully," and he was as black as Blackie Bear, and mighty little bigger. Un cle Joe let Bully stay in he yard every night, but he always slept right near the barn where his mother had her bed just the other side of the fence. But it seems that on this night Bully Calf was restless and could n't sleep well, or he was hungry, or something. Maybe he was jus: looking for some fun, as you know calves will, for few animals are more playful than a calf. Any way, along in the middle of the night Bully was prowling around back of the kitchen, and he came across a bucket of apples that Aunt Judy had left on. the step. Whether he wanted a late supper or an early breakfast nobody ever knew, but he started in eating those apples. He must have tried to swallow one without chewing it up much, for he got choked. lie coughed a time or two and got the apple up out of his throat, and he was either so glad or go mad that he gave one of those croaking sorts of noises that you have heard 17th, 1938.
