2 Catholic Churches Are Dedicated (Continued from page 1) actually established as a parish by the Most Rev. William J. Hafey, former bishop of Raleigh, and the Rev. Bernard McDevitt, came as the first pastor. It was during the period from that date until now that the ceremonies of the church were held in the local rectory and the six missions already referred to..' Early in 1939 Father Ambrose Rohrbacher ,of Milwaukee, one of the younger leaders of the church, was sent here to continue the work of the church. From the first day of his ministry until now, with burning zeal, and untiring enthusiasm, he labored to the end that here in W&ynesville there , should be built a great Catholic church as a beacon light to lead people in paths of righteousness in the honor and glory to God. Three yelrs had passed, during which time the work of Father Rohrbacher prospered, and the dream of a church became brighter as the days went by until the realization of his dream and that of his associates has now become reality. Yesterday St. John's was formally dedicated to the service of God. With solemn dignity visiting clergy were vested at St. John's school " which stands adjacent and a procession dignified and yet humble marched from that school to the doorways of the new church. Inspiring and solemn was the cere mony of the Baptism of Converts, among whom was one who had formerly been a minister of an-j other church. Following this came the formal dedication of the church with Pontificial High Mass which was celebrated by the Most Rev. Eugene J. McGuinness, D. bishop of Raleigh, with the as sistance of Rev. Henri Blanc, as sistant priest of the Mass; Rev. Arthur Racette, first deacon of the Mass; Rev. Philip B. Edelen, sec ond deacon of the Mass; Rev. Howard Lane, first deacon of the throne; Rev. Cletus Helfrich, sec ond deacon at the throne ; and Rev. John A. Brown, master of ceremonies. . The sermon was delivered by the Very Rev, Dr. H. Louis Motry, dean of the Church Law School, Catholic University, Washington, D. C. :: The service from 10:05 to 10:45 was broadcast over Station WWNC from Asheville. The dedicatory program brought to Waynesville a large number of church leaders both of the clergy and lay membership who were en tertained at lunch immediately fol lowing the services at the church. Lunch for the clergy was held at the Green Tree Tea Room, while lunch for all lay guests was at the Gordon Hotel. ; At 3 o'clock in the afternoon there was a premier showing of The Story of the Vatican, an RKO , full-length feature film at the Park Theatre as a courtesy for all dedication guests. In connection with the building of St. John's church in Waynes ville there was also built St. ' Joseph's church at. Bryson City; thus having a church one at the ' eastern gate and the other at the ( Vestern gate of the Great Smoky . Mountains National Park which was dedicated by President Roose velt a year ago. St. Joseph's church at Brvson City was formally dedicated Wed nesday evening. Here practically the same program was observed following a dinner for all guests at the Fryemont Inn. This service was also broadcast over station WWNC, - Asheville. Following the dedication ceremony there was a night showing of The Story of the Vatican at the Frye- mont Theatre as a courtesy of dedi cation guests. The Park now has the largest flow of tourists visitors of any national park in America. Of the million visitors who pass through the Park each year it can besafely presumed that 200, 000 are Catholics. St. Joseph's church will also serve the Cherokee Indian Reser vation, in the county of ' which Bryson City is the county seat. The erection of St Joseph's church was made : possible through the charity of the Marquette League for Indian Missions of New York City, - In connection with the work of the church here a parochial school was organized in 1939 when a three weeks' term was held in the rectory. . This school was estab lished by two Franciscan Sisters of the Order of St Francis, Kev. Sister Mary Inez and Rev. Sister Mary Jean. During the years since then this school has continued with marked success. In September. 1939, the J. R. Thomas property of this city was bought for school purposes and remodeled to suit the work. At the present time the faculty is composed of eight teach ers and there are sixty students. This is the first and only parochial school in this parish. GLASS National defense has caused the glass container industry to take on a significance, since no raw materials essential to rearmament are used in making the containers.
