Bobby Sloan Gets Promotion Sergeant Robert L. Sloan was onepf the 25 officers and enlisted men of Fort Jackson who received an appointment as warrant officer last Friday morning. The rank of warrant officer is neither that of an officer or en listed man, but would be consider ed to be the grade between the two. He USUallv holds the nnnitinn nf chief clerk in an office, bank lead er or some similar duty. This appointment comes as a deserved recognition of the ability and years of service for the sol diers of Fort JurVsnn All mon accented are trivpn a thnmncrfc an amination and are fully qualified to carry on the duties of warrant officer, post authorities said. Haywood Boy At U. S. Naval Training Station Hughes C. White, of Mt. Ster ling, who recently enlisted in the V. S. Navy, is stationed at the U. S. Naval Training station on the Great Lakes. During the course of his training, which in cludes elementary fundamentals of seamanship he will be given tests to determine to which of the service schools he will be sent or directly to sea for duty aboard one of the navy's Men-O-War. rl Gillett Now in All American ate Robert Gillett, who is led at Camp Claiborne, La., in the famous 82nd All can division. He is in the battalion. Private Gillett son of Mr. and Mrs. John of Lake Junaluska, and len in the service since March. d the Want Ads JOE F. CATHEY is now sta tioned at Camp Wolters, Texas, where he went after enlisting in the army. Joe tried to get into the marine corps and navy, and at each sta tion he passed, but was told he would have to wait two weeks for an opening. He was determined to get into some branch of the service, and so he joined the army, which took him at once. He now likes the army so, that he plans to remain, although he will soon have the opportunity of getting into any branch of the service..: He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Cathey. Mr. Cathey is coun ty auditor. Ernest L. Withers. Jr. Receives Commission Ernest L. Wither, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. E. L,! Withers, was commissioned a second lieutenant in the administrative department of the air corps from the officers training school of Miami Beach last week. He was one of 600 to receive a commission from this training school of its kind in the country, and one of 14 men to be made a cadet captain and instruc tor.'- Lt. Withers enlisted last Sep tember and was inducted into the service at Keesler Field, Miss., to which place he was transferred upon being commissioned. Corp. Bill Ray Here On Visit to Family Corporal Bill Ray, with U. S. Coast Guard Artillery Anti-air craft, stationed at Camp Stewart, Ga., is spending a week here with his family. Corporal Ray has been in the service for the past six month. Captain W. K. Cathey Promoted to Major Captain Walter , K. Cathey, of Clyde, has been promoted to major in the chemical warfare service at Edgewood Arsenal, Md it was learned here this week. Captain Cathey, who attended North Car olina State College, was a chem cal engineer for the Champion Fibre Company in civilian life. He is a reserve officer now on ac tive duty. Thomas Earl (Bud) Blalock, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Blalock, of Hazelwood, who recently vol unteered for service, has been called to duty, and is now station ed at Maxwell Field, Ala., where he will receive his basic training as a flying cadet. Corporal Jack Smith, of Fort Jackson, spent part of last week here with Mrs. Smith and his par AN ORDINANCE AUTHORIZ ING THE ISSUANCE OF $229,000 REFUNDING BONDS OF THE TOWN OF WAYNESVILLE BE IT ORDAINED by the Board of Aldermen of the Towii of Waynesville,; North Carolina: Section 1. That pursuant to the Municipal Finance Act, 1921, as amended, bonds of the Town of Waynesville of the maximum ag gregate amount of $229,000 are hereby authorized to be-issued for the purpose of refunding a like principal amount of valid exist ing debt of said Town incurred for necessary expenses and evi denced by the following outstand ing bonds which are redeemable prior to their maturity at the option of the Town and at their face value on any interest pay ment date: $33,000 Refunding Bonds, dat ed July 1, 1933, payable July 1, 1948, of $1000 each and numbered 17 to 49 inclusive. $65,000 Street Improvement Refunding Bonds, dated August 1, 1937, payable August 1, 1957, of $1000 each and numbered 1 to 4, inclusive, and 8 to 68, inclusive. $131,000 Street and General Refunding Bonds, dated July ,1, 1940, payable July 1, 1960, of $1000 each and numbered 3 to 32 inclusive; 41 to 49 inclusive; 53 and 54, 57 to 75 inclusive, 79 and 80, 83 to 96 inclusive; 100 to 103 inclusive; 106 to 117 inclu sive; 123 to 126 inclusive; 129 to 142 inclusive; 146 to 148 inclu sive; 157 to 170 inclusive; 176, 177, 183, 184. Section 2. That a tax sufficient to pay the principal and interest of the bonds herein authorized shall be annually levied and collected. Section 3. That a statement of debt of the Town has been filed with the Clerk and is open to public inspection. Section 4. That this ordinance shall take effect upon its pass age and shall not be submitted to the voters. . 1 The foregoing ordinance was passed on the 4th day of May, 1942, and was first puDiisnea on the 7th day of May, 1942. Anv action or proceeding ques tioning the validity of said ordi nance must be commenced with in thirty days after its first publication. Ernest Edwards Will Serve In Naval Reserve Ernest O. Edwards, who volun teered last month in the naval re serve, left here yesterday for a final examination in Raleigh, after which he.will report either to Nor folk, Va., or Newport, R. I. He has enlisted in the medical corps and will be a pharmacists mate. Mr. Edwards has lived in Way nesville for five years, and has been connected with the Garrett Funeral Home as embalmer and funeral director. He is a gradu ate of the Cincinnati College of Embalming and has a license to practice in both North Carolina and Georgia. ' Mrs. Edwards, who is a register ed nurse, will remain here while her husband is in the service and will )o private duty. Following his basic training Mr. Edwards will be transferred to a naval hospital. Sergeant Herbert Moore Plott, Jr., of Fort Jackson, spent the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Plott, at their home on the Soco Gap road. Jonathan Creek News The Woman's Society of Chris tian Service met at the home of Mrs. Jarvis Palmer last Wednes day. :..v Those attending the wedding of Miss Frances Allison in Waynes ville at St. John s Catholic church last Friday were: Rev. Arthur Moody, of Memphis, Tenn., David Hugh Moody, of Wel don, and Charles Moody, of Chapel Hill are visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. C, M. Moody. First Lieut. Members of the Home Demon stration Club will meet Friday Sergeant Rufus Carswell, of Fort Jackson, spent the week-end here with Mrs. Carswell. Private Fred Howell Messer, son of Mr, and Mrs. Jess Messer, of Hazelwood, who volunteered in April, has been transferred from Fort Jackson to Fort Bragg, where he will receive his basic training in the mechanized coprs. Private Paul Mull, of Fort Jack son, S. C, spent the the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Granville Mull. Private Robert Garrett, who is stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga., is spending 10 days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Garrett. Comoral Charlie Curtis, of Fort Jackson, S. C, spent this week-end witn nis mother, Mrs. Mary Curtis. Sergeant Joe Sloan, of Fort Jackson, visited his family here during the week. Corporal Jack Smith, of Fort Jackson, was a visitor here during the week-end. Private Dewey McKay, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. L. McKay, of Ha zelwood, who wag recently induct ed into service, is now stationed with the headquarters detachment, Louisiana. Corporal Kermit Murray, of Fort Jackson, was a visitor here during the week-end with his family. Sergeant Chas. Burgess, who is stationed at Fort JackBon, spent a couple of days here during the week with his family. Master Sergeant Robert Fergu son of Camp Pickett, Va., spent the past week-end with his family here.' -:. Lt. Grover M. Davis, U. S. Navy, who is stationed at Quantico, Va., spent the week-end in town with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grover C. Davis. Alma Jackson Is On W.C.T.C. Dean's List Alma Jackson, daughter of Mrs. R. W, Jackson, of Waynesville, and a senior at Western Carolina Teachers College, has been select ed as one of the twelve who are on the Dean's list for winter quar ter at the college. ( This special list which is de cided upon by a group of faculty members is meant to encourage the development of all-round students who have met in full the follow ing requirements: (1). A stu dent becomes eligible for the Dean's list within the second quar ter of his enrollment at Western Carolina Teachers College; (2). A student must have made the schol astic honor roll during the quar ter for which the selection is made; (3).;A student must be active in at least one extra-curriculiar activ ity ;( 4 ) A student must possess social adjustments, leadership, health, personality, good atti tude, and morality. Meeting all qualifications for the Dean's list means carrying with it certain special privileges which the faculty and administra tive officers of the college grant to those named on the list. M. P. Blanton and Family. Two Palmer Boys Get Diplomas At State Among those receiving diplo mas at State College on May 9, were Joe H. Palmer and Glenn C Palmer, Jr., sons of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn C. Palmer, of Crabtree. Mr. and Mrs. Palmer and Mrs. W. A. Palmer, mother of the form er, attended the graduation exer cises. The two graduates special ized in agriculture work. Beaverdam News A successful B. T. U, study course was held at North Canton Baptist church the past week. The average attendance was 42 with 28 taking the examination. This was the most successful one held here. The following were the teachers: Rev. Hobert Rogers, adults; Edgar Me haffey, young people; Mrs. Hobert Rogers, intermediates, and Miss Hazel Frady, juniors. In the ab sence of the pastor, Rev. Hobert Rogers, who with his family were visiting relatives in Gastonia, Rev. Oder Burnett, filled his appoint ments at both morning and services. Mrs. W. F. McCrary and Mrs. T. B. MeCracken, of Crabtree, went with Mr. and Mrs. Paul Rob inson and daughter, Mary Cather ine, to Alcoa, Tenn., to visit Mr. and Mrs, D, R. Baldwin over the week-end.
