Of this amount of scrap, 122 tons was rr.hired in the North Carolina section of the park and the remain der in Tennessee. Ihe greatest nmniinf. o-ntViprpd in North Caro lina was in the Oconaluftee and Straight Fork sections. . Old sawmills which had devas tated a part of the area in the days before the establishment of the park and which were situated so far back In the woods that the owners deemed it more advisable to abandon them there rather than go to the expense of trying to get them out- abandoned boilers, rail road rails; and worn out equip ment which had been used by tne RnrPAii of Public Roads. Park Service, and CCC, made up this scrap. In several cases of worn out equipment, the scrap was re covered from barrow pits. In many insfnnrp the scrap had to be re- at a time, and acety lene torches were used to cut it up and make it into pieces which could be removed.
