This makes them easy to walk up, as a long landing breaks the steady climb. The stairs enter the second floor about half way the store. In the front of the second floor is the large ready-to-wear depart ment, featuring four fitting rooms and an alteration room, all behind mirrored front doors. The dresses, coats and suits are kept in the special booths, made especially for them. The fixtures at this end of the store are in a horseshoe shape, and provides a full view of the entire stock at once. Millinery occupies part of the section, including modern tables, Large mrirors fitted in the fixtures provide plenty of room for a num ber of customers to try on hats at once. On the right of the read-to-wear department is the sports wear, a growing and popular de partment with the firm. Glass counter cases, with glassed in wall cases feature this department's fixtures, and enables the different groups of merchandise to be effec tively displayed. Starting back at the point where the stairs enter the second floor is the enlarged underwear depart ment, with more of the glassed wall cases for displays. Large tables of displayed merchandise also adds much to the appearance of the de partment, which boasts a dressing room. Extending on down the right side, is the children's department, with special built cases for dresses and coats. . This department also features a large dressing room. The baby department has been carefully looked after in this new arrangement. A special counter is constructed, with glass top and sides, that enables customers to be seated while making their selec tions. All merchandise in this de partment is kept in tight fitting drawers, that are under the central display fixtures. This drawer sys tem keeps all merchandise for baby under cover. Mr. Jennings pointed out that boys wear out more clothes than any other member of the family, so the firm has stocked an extra large selection for the young sters. The department extends all the way across the store, and mer chandise s arranged in Bhelves as well as on tables. In the extreme back of the sec ond floor is the household depart ment, which has had an increasing volume of business for many months. The department is now enlarged, and the merchandise is especially arranged on fixtures and tables made for the goods. This will enable a customer to see how the items will look in their home, instead of hav ing to use their imagination, the manager pointed out. The ladies' comfort and powder rooms in the rear. Ack-ack fire over Bengazi, Libya, nearly tore away the left aileron of the B-24 Consolidated bomber, but the craft flew back safely to its base nearly a thousand miles away from the scene of action. The return trip was made despite two severed control cables, the weakened wing and two hundred holes in the fuselage. Carolina Bird Lore The Mocking Bird By a S. BRIMLEY This bird is slightly smaller than a robin, the general color gray, with blackish wings and tail, and with white underparts, the mocking bird is further distin guished by a large white patch on each wing and by the outer tail feathers being broadly tipped with white. It is an abundant year-round resident in the eastern counties and to a less extent in the central section of the State, but it is of rather local occurrence in the mountains where it is not at all plentiful. Pre-eminently distinguished by its singing ability, there are still people who dispute its right to be ing our foremost singer, often naming the brown thrasher as hav ing a better voice. Personally, I am inclined to agree that the thrasher does have a better natural voice, but he has not as great a variety of notes and he only sings for a short period of the year while the mocker sings nearly the whole year round and can imitate almost any sound he hears, so I give the prize to the mocker. A mocker does not like to have his nesting territory invaded by others of the same species and will drive them away from the vicinity of his nest, and will also attack any stray dog or cat that ventures too near. The nest is a rather bulky affair, built usually in the crotch or on the limb of some small tree, and the eggs are some four or five in Hudson Career Is Inspiring In His Line (Continued front other such stores bearin. 4v - iiavnask.-n alterbor,. .
