As the records of the bank have shown an increase, so have the incomes of the business firms and the individuals of the community and the county. The past forty years have mark ed many changes in this area, and the First National Bank has had a leading part in the advancement made. Noland, cashier. The figures include- a total of ..$357,300 in government bonds of which $50,000 were purchased this month, that will be issued by the government on December the 11th. In addition to the government bonds the bank owns $167,156.78 state wide bonds, the majority of which are State of North Carolina bonds, according to Mr. Noland. The banks owns $153,900 worth of city and town bonds of North Caroling municipalities and have a total investment of $87,298.23 in county bonds in North Carolina. It is the established policy of the bank according to Mr. Noland to purchase only government, state wide and high grade county and municipal bonds. Mr. Noland em phasized that no county or mu nicipal bonds outside of North Carolina were bought or owned by the bank. Neither does the bank buy any corporate or indus trial bonds. All the bonds owned by the bank are current, and ac cording to the National Bank ex aminer are suitable for bank investments. J. R. Boyd Served As First National President 28 Years J. R. Boyd, who . for twenty eight years served as president of the First National Bank, has to his credit; a total of 34 years active banking experience. He has been for many years one of the leaders in the financial, political and re ligious affairs of the community. Mr. Boyd, former resdent of the Jonathan section of the county, taught in the county schools and engaged in farming for 15 years before he, came to live in Waynes ville, after his election as register of deeds of Haywood county, register of deeds he was elected cashier of the old Commercial Bank -(Continued on page four) First Bill Issued By Bank Is Framed And On Display - The order for money to the comptroller of the currency by the officials of the First National Bank was on November 27, 1902. The officials aake dthat place be prepared for printing $3,000 and $5,750 in 5, 10, and 20 denomi nations. The first bill issued by the bank is a five dollar denomination and was owned by the late Dr. J. Howell Way, chairman of the board of directors for more than 20 years and one of the leaders in dictating the policy of the bank. The bill has been framed and now hangs in the bank. It was presented to the institution by Mrs. J. Howell Way. The issuance of National Bank currency has no wbeen discontinued bv the treasury department. WAY Latest Posting And Bookkeeping Methods Are Used Forty years ago when the First National Bank opened its doors for service there were no modern banking machines in use and hours of tedious work was required of its employes that would be impos sible today with the increased bus iness transacted.
