Summerrow, of Hazelwood, was in ducted into the army from New port News, Va., April 7, 1E41, go ing to Camp Lee, Petersburg, Va., from there he was sent to Fort Meade. Maryland, for basic train ing in the field-artillery. Three months after going into the service he was made a corporal and has served in the Chesapeake Bay coast defense area for the past few months, being stationed on the coasts of Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia. He was recently promoted to sergent and placed in a training unit and transferred to Camp Swift, Texas. Messer, h i : V V - f s 3 Gaddis Brothers Volunteers In Atlantic City Serving In Army Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Gaddis have three sons now in service, one is in Africa, one in Mississippi and the third in camp in this state. Cpl. Luther Gaddis has been in service three years, and is now in Africa. He volunteered and is with the engineering division. Be fore pnterino- service h was em ployed on the scenic Parkway at i Wagon Road Gap by Albert Bro thers, contractor. His parents have not heard from him since October 6th. Cpl. Willard Gaddis is at Camp Shelby, Miss. He was promoted from private to corporal in six months. He drove a truck for Haywood Supply Company before entering service. Wm. Garrett Gaddis is a stone mason by trade and has also been in service for six months. He is at Camp Butner. Major Lancaster Given Promotion Eats Cake While In Fox Hole On Battlefield Mrs. Robt. B. Pearce sent her brother in the South Pacific a fruit cake last October. AH n, prominent busi ness man, farmer and civic leader, is now serving in the Army, and is stationed at Camp Butner. Mr. Allen volunteered many months ago, and left here tho 21st for induction. When he volunteer ed he sold the furniture, dry goods and clothing departments of his firm C. N. Allen & Co. The groc ery and niark t department is now in charge of Roy Ruff, who has been with the firm many years. Mr. Allen has been in business in Hazelwood for more than 20 years. Ho served as alderman of the town several times, was past president of the Boosters Club, member of Rotary, chairman of the local school board, member of the bank committee and director of the Hifywood Home Building and Loan Association. He took an active part in civic affairs, and spent much time to the promotion of better farming and cattle raising. He is a leader in Hereford breeding. "I feet it is my duty to join and help. I believe I can be of service to my country by serving in the army,'' he said, as he left. Mrs. Allen will remain here. Aviation Cadet Leather wood Completes Training Aviation Cadet James Robert Leatherwood, son of Rev. and Mrs. Frank Leatherwood, of Hazelwood, has successfully completed his pre flight training at the Santa Ana Army Air Base, Santa Ana, Calif. He has been ordered to an advanc ed flying school for further in struction as a Bombardier-Navigator. In the next phase of his instruc tion, he wil receive training under actual flying conditions and upon completion of it will receive his sil ver wings. He is a graduate of the local high school and of Wake Forest College. 1 PVT DONALD E. MORROW, 18, who volunteered in November and is in the Army Air Corps. He has recently returned to Atlantic City after a seven-day furlough spent with his parents. Pvt. Donald E. Morrow Returns To Camp After Visit To Parents Here Private Donald E. Morrow, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis Mor row, of Wayntsville, has returned to Atlantic City after spending a seven-day furlough here with his parents. IM. Morrow, with the A'rniy Air Corps, volunteered in November, and first reported for duty at Fort Bragg. From Bragg he vas trans ferred to Clearwater, Fin., and from there to his present address. Prior to his entering the service he was employed at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News. His brother, Private Wallace L. Morrow, 20, is attending a gunnery school at Ft. Myers, Fla. He also volunteered at the same time in November and the two brothers re ported to Fort Bragg. Pvt. Wallace Morrow was trans ferred to Clearwater and then to Ft. Myers. He was formerly em ployed by Martin Electric Company, but at the time he volunteered he was employed at Newport News. r jf Pvt. John Hall, Jr., Is Stationed At Wheeler Private John Hall, Jr., who was inducted at Fort Jackson, is now stationed at ('amp Wheeler, Ga. Prior to his entering the service he was employed at the England Walton Company. Mrs. John Hall, Jr., returned during the week from Camp Wheel er where she visited her husband for several days. Major N. F. Lancaster, member of the staff of the Station Hos pital, Camp Gordon, Ga., was pro moted from Captain to Major last mont ii. Major Lancaster has been in ser vice for a year, and prior to en tering the Medical Corps of the Army was a practicing physician here. Last summer he was sent to Mayo Brothers Hospital for a 12 weeks course. He has been stationed at camp Gordon Hospital since he entered service. Mrs. Lancaster and son Bobby, are with Major Lancaster. Pvt. William Medford At Officers Candidate School Private William Medford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Will A. Medford, is now stationed at Fort Benning, where he is attending Officers Can didate School. He has been in the service for the past six months and was in ducted at Fort Jackson and from there was transferred to Camp Wolters, Texas, for his basic train ing. He has recently completed a parachute course. Prior to his entering the service he was engaged in farming and stock raising. He was particularly interested in raising horses. Pfc Bill Toy Observes Christmas Month Late Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Toy heard from their son Pfc Bill Toy, a Marine in the South Pacific, that he had received his Christmas pack age on January 21, and although a little late4 had especially enjoyed the fruit cake, which reached there in execellent condition.
