The letter was writ ten by Captain Robert Paullin, who has recently returned from over seas. Sgt. Sparks was born and reared in Haywood County. At the time he voluteered in the ser 'Ensign Brooks Promoted To Lieutenant (J. jG.) Ensign Tom Brooks, U. S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Phelps Brooks, of W'aynesville, has re cently been promoted to Lieutenant (j.p-K Lt. Brooks has been in the ser vice over a year. He volunteered and was sent shortly after to Chi cago to a mid-shipman s school and Dive Bomber vire he was attending school in from there he was sent to Boston. Greenville, S. "' ' "About two weeks ago I left our desert base in Africa to begin my homeward journey. I saw your son right before my departure. He was in fine health, but of course anx ious to return home again. There can be many words of praise said for Sgt. Sparks. You have every reason to be very proud of him. He is doing more than his share for his country. Stevenson, Fletcher Trantham and Kenneth Rogers. Pvt. Arling McGaha Home From Camp Adair Private Arling McGaha, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. McGaha, of the ; Maggie section of the county has been spending a 15-day furlough with his parents and his wife. Pvt. McGaha has been in the ser vice for the past six months. He was inducted at Camp Wheeler, Ga., and from there was transferred to Camp Butner, and from Butner to 1 Camp Adair, Oregon, his present post of duty. Prior to entering the service Pvt. McGaha was engaged in farming in Haywood County. CPL. EARL B. -SUTTON is now stationed at Fort Knox, Ky. He entered service in September, 1942, at Camp Croft. He took his basic training at Camp Wolters, Texas, and later was sent to Fort Knox. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sutton, of Clyde, route 1. He is a graduate of the Crabtree high school. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. P. D. Turner of route one, and was inducted into service in February, 1942 with the Air Forces. Before going to officers candi date school three months ago he held the rank of staff sergeant He is a graduate of the Waynes ville high school and Berea College, at Berea, Ky. Corporal Lewis Mathis Spends 10-Day Furlough Corporal Lewis Mathis, of Camp Blanding, Fla., is spending a ten day furlough here with his parents and friends. Cpl. Mathis entered the service in September, 1040. having left here with Company guard unit. Cpl. Mat his was home bv his wife, th Flora Rathbone, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Hill, of Sau "H" national accompanied former Miss Teague. Put in class 2-C were: Frank es F. Lee, Ernest S. Benjamin Crawford and Junior I Edgar V. Steading. HUTCHIN SON, a brother of Mrs. Paul Hyatt, at the Piedmont Hotel, is now a captain of a dive bomber. He has visited here and is well known. His plane took an active part in the battl of Midway, and when the official tilin was shown friends rec ognized him a number of times. Ca;:ain Hutchinson received his mechanical aviation training at the Naval Aviation Training School in San Diego. Calif. He has displayed marked mechanical ability during the time he has been in the service. His ancestors took an active part in the American Revolution, and it is said that one ancestor was offered command of the American armed forces before it was given to Geoige Washington. SF.l.l ISM HKAT1.N Kansas City- When Harold G. Crowe refused to surrender his last cigarette to two men who demand ed it, the men gave him a brutal beating, telling him his attitude was scllish. Crowe enjoyed his last cigarette en route to a hospital in an amhnlii'iee. Mrs. Carl Ratcliff Is With Husband In Calif. Mrs. Carl RaUliff left Friday for Indio, Calif., U be near her husband who is stationed at Camp Young. The time of her stay is indefinite, but she plans to be back by the time schools opens to re sume teaching. Pvt.
