More Farm Machinery
A total of 3011,000 tons of car
bon steel, with other materials in
proportion, has been allocated to
the farm machinery program for
the quarter beginning July 1. An
additional 200,000 tons of steel
have also been approved for each
of the three quarter from Octo
ber 1, 1943, to July 1, '.ii. Dur
ing the third quarter of this year,
special emphasis will be given to
the manufacturer of harvesting
machinery for this year's crops.

Lt. Thad O. Chafin, Jr.
Receives Promotion
Lt. Thad O. Chafin, Jr., who is
stationed at Fort Benning, Ga.,
was promoted from first to second
, lieutenant in May, it was recently
learned here.
Lt. Chafin, who is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Thad Y. Chafin of
the Fairview Road, and the grand
son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Boyd,
has been in the service since 1940
I when he left here with the Nation
al Guard unit. He was stationed
at Fort Jackson for sometime, fol
lowing which he was transferred
to Officers' Candidate School at
Fort Benning, from hieh he was
graduated and commissioned last
I December.
Lt. Chafin was given a leave
following his graduation rom Fort
Benning and returned there as an
! instructor.
I Lt. Chafin attended the local

ing, has two sons in the U. S.

is now stationed at Seattle, Wash.,
where he is attending an airplane
factory school. He has heen in
the service since November 1".
and was inducted at Camp
Croft. From Croft he was trans
ferred to Fort Jackson and from
there to Miami Beach, where he
took his basic training.
After completion of the course
in Miami he was sent to Amarillo,
Texas, where be took training as
an aviation mechanic at the army
air force technical training school.
From Texas he was transferred to
his present post.
Prior to entering' the service he
was employed by the Carr Lumber
Company and also was engaged in
farminjr. lie is a graduate of the
Fines Creek high school.
Private First Class Ralph F.
Hannah is now stationed at Kees
lor Field, Miss. He was inducted
in the service at Camp Croft on
January loth of this year. From
Croft he was transferred to Fort
Jackson and from Jackson to Kees
ler Field, where he is attending a
school for aviation mechanics.
Before entering the armed forces
Pfc. Hannah was employed by the
Carr Lumber Company, and prior
to that time he farmed. He is a

Lt. Carswell, who left h re with
the National Guard, received his

then entered Officer Candidate
School at Fort Benning. Ga., being

ridge. Ky., where he and Mrs.
Carswell are now residing.
Lt. Carswell has three brothers

is stationed at Camp I'landing, Fla.,
and First Lieut. Sam Carswell.

GOES BACK TO CAMP
Corporal John R. Trull, son of
and Mrs. Kich Jrull, has re
turned to Chanute Field, 111., after
spending a ten-day furlough here
with his parents.
Cpl. Trull volunteered December
11, 1941. He was inducted at Fort
McPherson, Ga., and from there
was sent to Keesler Field, Miss.,
and from there to his present post.

RETURNS TO VIRGINIA
Corporal James L. Rogers, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Nath Rogers, is
now stationed at Camp Ashby, Va.
He returned to camp after spending
a ten-day furlough here with his
wife and baby at Saunook and his
parents on the Dellwood road.
Oil Roerers has been in the ser
vice eighteen months, and has been
at several camps on the eastern
coast.
Staff Sgt. Carroll Whitner
Promoted to Master Sgt.
Staff Soij-eant Carroll Whitner
was promoted to master sergeant
at the regular drill of the local
unit of the State Guard on T, -s-day
evening.
He has been assigned to regi
mental headquarters as serg nit
major.
Vance M. Spivey Stationed
At Oklahoma Air Base
Trainee Vano- M. Spivey, son of
Mr. and Mrs. John M. Spivey, of
this city, has arrived at the Okla
homa Baptist University, in Shaw
nee, Okla, for a course of Army
Air Force instruction, lasting ap
proximately five months.
Upon completion of the course
he will be classified as a pilot.
