Fergu son, of Waynesville, is now station ed at New Cumberland, Pa. He has been in the service since May, 1943 and was inducted at Philadelphia. Prior to entering the service he was employed as a bus driver for the Deerfield Packing Company, of Deerfield, N. J. He is a graduate of the Waynesville high school. PETE JOHNSON MOORE, U. S. Navy. (See .Memorial Page). Pvt. Fred Tavlor Peden, Jr., Stationed In Miami Priviit- Fred Taylor Peden, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Pede.i, of Canton, who is serving in the Army Air Corps, is stationed in Miami, Fla. He entered the ser vice in Nov., 1 !42 and was sta tioned first at the Ashoville-Hen-dersonville Air Post and then at the Lumberton Air Post before being sent to his present post. Before entering the service he was employed by the Mecklenberg Iron Works, Charlotte, as assistant foreman of the shop. He attended the Canton high school and North Carolina State College in Raleigh. He has one brother in the service. Pfc. James D. McCracken Has 13-day Furlough Here Private First Class James D. Mc Cracken, who is stationed at Or lando Air base, in Florida, is spending a 13-day furlough here with relatives. He was inducted in the service on Sept. 14, 1942 at Camp Croft. From Croft he was transferred to Fort Bragg, and then to Camp Lee, Va. He is the son of the Mr. and Mrs. Dave Mc Cracken and has made his home with his uncle, W. E. Smith. He was employed by the Unagusta Manufacturing Company prior to his entering the service. Pvt. Larry L. Williams Inducted at Camp Croft Private Larry Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Williams, of Waynesville, route 2, was induct ed at Camp Croft on June 15, of this year and has reported for duty to Fort Jackson. He was a graduate of Mars Hill College and received his B. S. de gree from Wake Forest on May 24, of this year. Mark Rathbone Now in Georgia Private Mark Rathbone, son of Richard Rathbone and the late Mrs. Etta Rathbone, of Fines Creek, entered the army in 1942 and took his basic training at Camp Hood, Tex. Since then he has been transferred to a camp in Georgia. Sgt. James Henry Toy Stationed at Fort Bragg 1st Technician Sergeant James Henry Toy, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Toy, of Waynesville, is with the Finance Department of the 101st Airborne Division, U. S. Army at Fort Bragg, N. C. He was inducted at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Ga., on August 15, 1942, transferred to Army Finance School at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, Ind., from there to Advanced Finance School at Wake Forest, N. C, and from there to his present position at Fort Bragg. Before entering service he was employed as auditor and account ant by Arthur Anderson & Co., CPA's and Auditors of Chicago, working out of their Atlanta, Ga. office. He graduated from Way nesville T. H. S. as valedictorian of his class in spring of 1937 and en tered University of N. C. that fall. Pvt. John Z. Rathbone In New Hampshire Private John Zebedee Rathbone. son of Mrs. C. R. Rathbone, of Cyde, route 1, is stationed at Camp Langdon, New Hampshire. He en tered the service on Nov. 10, 1941 and was inducted at Fort Bragg. From Bragg he was sent to Fort Knox, then Fort Dix and from lat ter to present post. He attended the Fines Creek high school and was a former farmer. In Army I' ' ' ' Private John Zebedee Rathbone, of Camp Lang. Robert Lee Ferguson U. S. Army in Tennessee Chief Warrant Officer Rnhert. Lee Ferguson, son of Julius C. and Maude Ferguson, of Wavnes- ville, who volunteered in the army in 1925 is now stationed at Camp Forrest, Tenn. He was inducted in Raleigh and has served since then in many posts. He was sta tioned at one time in Honolulu. He attended the local schools and was employed by the Champion Paper and Fibre Company at the time he entered the service. Pvt. Coleman B. Green Serving At Fort Custer Private Coleman Burch Green, son of Dolph Green, of Sylva, who resided in Waynesville betore he volunteered in the service on Octo ber 28, 1942, is now stationed at Fort Custer, Battle Creek, Mich. He was inducted at Fort Bragg and transferred from there to Cochran Field, Macon, Ga. Prior to his entering the service he was employed at the American Enka Corporation as n spinner. He was educated in the Sylva schools. JACK RATHBONE Pvt Samuel Q. Burnett Entered Service on Jan. 15 Private Samuel Quenton Bur nett, son of Mrs. Undine Burnett, of Lake Junaluska, who is serv ing with the Coast Guard, gives his address now care of Postmas ter, New York. He was inducted at Fort Jackson and from there was sent to Camp Hood, Tex. rom tamp Hood he was transfer red to Pine Camp, N. Y. He at tended local schools and was em ployed by Jerry Liner before en tering service. Lt. James Coffrey Turner, Jr., At Camp Barkley Lt. James Coll' ley Turner, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Turner, f Elmer, N. J., is now stationed at Camp Barkley, Tex. He was inducted in the service on Septem ber 11, 1942, at Fort Due. From Fort Dix he was transferred to Camp Pickett, Va., and from there to his present post. Before entering -the service he was employed by the Illinois Glass Company as a foreman. He is the grandson of the late J. A. Turner of Dell wood and of P. L. Turbyfill of Waynesville. Central Cleaners Phone 113 CVVO Robert Love Sloan Serving at Camp Forrest Chief Warrant Officer Robert Love Sloan, who volunteered in the service on Jan. 6, 1941, is now stationed at Camp Forrest, Tenn. He was inducted in the service at Fort Jackson and from there was transferred to Camp Blanding, Fla., and from the latter to his present post of duty. CWO Sloan was educated in the local schools and at Duke University. Prior to entering the service he was em ployed as a stenographer by the A. C. Lawrence Leather Company. Adkins Serving Overseas Technician, Fifth Class Ronald Winford Adkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Adkins, of Waynesville, route 1, is serving with the Coast Guard. He was inducted in the service on October 3, 1941, at Fort Bragg and frpm there was trans ferred to Fort Riley, Kan. From Riley he was transferred to Fort Dix, N. J., and from the latter to Brooklyn. Prior to entering the service he was employed by the Unagusta Manufacturing Company. He was graduated from the Waynesville high school in the class of 1939. He gets his mail through the post master of New York. At Camp Sibert Captain John Reitzel, former as sistant county farm agent, who is now stationed at Camp Sibert, Gadsden, Ala. He had a commis sion of first lieutenant in the U. S. Army Reserves and was called to active duty in March, 1942. He first served at Camp Wheeler and from there was transferred to his present post. Pvt. Ernest B. Messer Now In Los Angeles Private Ernest Boyd Messer, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Messer, of Clyde, route 1, is stationed in Los Angeles, Calif. He is a graduate of the Fines Creek high school and at the time he entered the army was engaged in farming. Pvt, Messer was inducted m the service on January 21 of this year, at Camp Croft. From there was sent to Camp Young, Calif., and from Young to Camp Coxcomb, Calif. From the latter he was transferred to his present poet. Wilburn P. Campbell Is Given Rank of Cpl. Cpl. Wilburn P. Campbell, Way nesville, North Carolina, has been promoted from the rank of Pfc, md is assigned to the Tank Des- royer Replacement Training Cen ter at North Camp Hood, Texas. The Tank Destroyer shoulder in signia depicts a black panther de vouring a tank, the mission of this force being the destruction of en emy tanks by accurate gunfire from stealthily occupied positions. Auxiliary Mary Davis Now Stationed In Fla. Auxiliary Mary E. Davis, of Waynesville, who has been station ed at the third training center of tha Women's Army Auxiliary Corps at Fort Orglethorpe, Ga.j has been assigned to Marianna, AAF, in Marianna, Fla. Private First Class Paul Green Overseas . Private First Class Paul Green, son of Mrs. Delia B. Green, of Hazelwood, U. S. Army, is now stationed overseas. Pfc. Green was inducted at Fort Bragg on No vember 2C 1941. From Fort Bragg he was trans ferred to Fort Eustis, Va., and from there to Fort Shendon, 111. From the last named he was sent to Camp Pickett, Va., and from there overseas. Pfc. Green attended the Hazel- wood school and prior to entering the service was employed as a caddy at the Waynesville Country Club golf course. Warrant Officer G rover Thomas Branch Was Recently Decorated Warrant Officer G rover Thomas Branch, foster son of Rev. and Mrs. Avery Peek, of Bethel, has re cently been decorated for bravery in action. V. O. Branch volunteered in the V. S. Navy in l!:',u and has served in all the major foreign ports. He was in the battle of the Solomons and was aboard the San Francisco. He was a student at the Franklin high school when he volunteered in the service. Pfc. James Sheehan Stationed In Texas Private First Class James Shee han, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sheehan, of Waynesville, is serv ing in the army and is stationed at Camp Swift, Tex. He entered the servle on February 19, 1943, and was inducted at Fort Bragg. From Bragg he was sent to his present post. Pfc. Sheehan was educated in the Waynesville schools and prior to entering the service was em ployed as a carpenter by T. A. Loveing in Wilmington. Pvt. Paul C. Blackwell Somewhere In England Private Paul Clarke Blackwell, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Black well, of Waynesville, is stationed somewhere in England. He was inducted in the service on May 20, 1942, at Fort Jackson. From Jackson he was sent to Aberdeen Proving Grounds, and from there to Camp Blanding and then to Camp Kilmer. Before entering the service he was employed by the Champion Paper and Fibre Company as a paper trimmer. He was educated in the local schools and Porter Mili tary School of Charleston, S. C. Edith Mehaffey Lewis Serving In WACs' Edith Mehaffey Lewis, daughter of Mrs. Ora F. Mehaffey, of Way nesville, who enlisted in the Wa man's Army Corps on March 24, of this year, is now attending a mess sergeant's school at Fort Ogle thorpe. Sgt Lewis reported for active duty to Fort Oglthorpe and has completed training in a irook's and baker's school there prior to the present training she is taking. She is attached to Com pany 3, of the 21st regiment. Prior to entering the service- she was employed by the Cham pion Paper and Fibre Company in the Book Mill. Pvt. Robert W. Sutton Is Transferred Private Robert W. Sutton, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Sutton, has been transferred from Fort Jack son to North Camp Hood, Tex. Pvt. Sutton was inducted on March 19. of this year and was stationed for a while at Fort Jackson. He is attached to a tank destroyer. R. H. Gibson, Petty Officer U. S. Navy, Here on Leave R. H. Gibson, Petty Officer, First Class, who is stationed at Camp Edincott, Davisville, R. I., is spend ing a ten-day leave here with his lamity. ir. uioson, who is a vet eran of the Wrorld War 1, Pvt. Ned Glavich Is At Camp Wheeler Private Edward C. Glavich was inducted into the service on June the 15th, at Fort Bragg. Private Glavich enlisted in the Army Reserve Corps at Davidson College, but being in the advanced R. O. T. C. was allowed to re main in college until he completed his junior year. He is now at Camp Wheeler, Ga. MACK STAMEY, U. S. Navy. (See Memorial Page). Cpl. Willard Medford Serving In Africa Corporal Willard Medford, son of Bass Medford, of Waynesville, is with the armed forces in Africa. He has been in the service since November 7, 1941, and was induct ed at Fort Bragg. From Fort Bragg he was trans ferred to Fort Knox, Ky., and then to Fort Benning. From Fort Ben ning he was sent to Fort Bragg and from the latter to his present station overseas. He attended the local school and before entering the service was engaged in farming. He has been promoted to corporal since he has been on combat duty overseas. Pfc. Johnnie Lewis Ruff Now In California Private First Class Johnnie Lewis Ruff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Ruff, of Hazelwood, is sta tioned in San Francisco, Calif. He has been in the service since Oc tober 3, 1941, and was inducted at Fort Bragg. From Fort Bragg he was trans ferred to Fort Riley, Kan., and from there to Fort Bliss, Tex. From the latter he was sent to his pi esent post. Pvt. Ruff was educated in the local schools and prior to enter ing the service was employed by the Unagusta Manufacturing Com pany as a machine operator. He has one brother in the service. Pvt. Albert Leslie Ruff Stationed In Washington Private Albert Leslie Ruff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Ruff, of Ha zelwood, is stationed in Vancouver, Wash. He was inducted in the service on May 18th of this year at Camp Croft, and from there was transferred to his present post. Pvt. Ruff was educated in the local high school and before enter ing the armed forces was employ ed at the Newport News Shipbuild ing and Dry Dock Company as a plumber. Staff Sgt. W. C. Bradburn Now In Michigan Staff Sgt. Williard Carl Brad burn, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Bradburn, of Canton, is now sta tioned at Fort Custer, Mich. He volunteered in the service in June, 1940, and was inducted at Fort Bragg. From Fort Bragg he was sent to Chattanooga, Tenn. From Chattanooga he was trans Pi ior to 1940 he served two years ferred to his present post of duty, in Panama. Sgt.
