THE WAYNESVILLE MOUNTAIN EER (One Day Nearer Victory) THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER o Way By WhichFathers ToBeDraftedGiven,To Act On Separate Cases Fathers working in the least es sential industries will be the first 3-A men called up in the October draft. Sdective Service Director Her shey has issued instructions to lo cal draft boards on the order cf induction. He revealed recently that close to one-half million fa thers will have to join the colors by January 1. Hershey instructed the boards to call registrants in this order: First Single men without de pendents. Second Single men with collat eral dependents such as parents. Third Married men without children. Fourth Men with children who remain in activities and occupa tions designated as non-deferrable. And last Other men with chil dren. Hershey emphasized in his an nouncement that even if all the 1,373,000 men occupationally de ferred were placed in the draft to delay the induction of fathers, the number of men accepted would do little more than complete draft calls throughout January. Hershey urges draft boards to go over their list of fathers with a fine-toothed comb. He estimates that 446,000 fathers will have to be put into uniform by January 1 to meet the six-month quota from July to the end of this year. He says fathers should be draft ed on the basis of their contribu tion to the war effort. In the meantime there is grow ing concern in the aircraft indus try as to the effect future draft calls will have on production sche dules. Under the selective service set up draft boards have to determine cases individually. War production board members are studying the situation with a view toward asking War Manpow er Commissioner McNutt to per mit group deferments for aircraft workers. TRANSACTIONS IN Real Estate (As Recorded to Monday b'oon Of This Wek) Bca cerdam Township E. N. Vaughn, et ux to Bovis Green, et ux. Lt. Fred Martin, Band Director, Makes Good Lt. Fred Martin, newly commis sioned band director at the 81st College Training Detachment, at Sioux City, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Martin, is making a name for himself as head of a military band. The following story of his ach ievements appeared in a recent copy of the detachment paper; Lt. Martin has fond hopes for the future of the military band here, which is really getting on the ball. In the past, marching to our band was an effort rather than a pleas ure; but that was due to insuffi cient musicians and poor instru ments. With the cooperation of Lt. Cohen, the band has managed to acquire better-grade pieces. A great surprise to Lt. Martin was the number of new class 10 men who turned out to join the band. On August 4, they held their first practice with the new men and in struments. For the first time in many weeks melodious music echo ed forth from the barn. At Sat urday retreat the band impressed all with its stirring music and pre cision formations. The men who were playing were proud that they were able to make a good showing for their detachment officers. Cadets Peltier and Aeandrett looked lost to the world as their trumpets sang out in perfect har mony. Cadet Moynahan who is one of the best trombone players this college has seen, looked as if he was going to put a little "rag time" into the "Military Escort." It was the drummers, Cadets Schafer and Reiner, who gave the men their marching impetus. Thursday night when the swim mers show off their aquacade, they will swim to the music of our mili tary band. It will play music that's never been heard on the reviewfield. Lt. Martin promises a real night of entertainment for those who will be there. Crabtrer Township Annie Sanford to Ben G. West, ft ux.
