Brothers Serving In Army ? 3 M4 .MAa 'r'jim. I r i few?' I' I MR. AND MRS. HARDY HANEY, of Clyde, R. F. D. No. 1, have two sons in the armed forces. Pvt. Robert D. Haney (right), and Private Vinson Haney. The former recently spent a -M-day furlough with his parents. He was inducted at Fort Jackson on February 16, 1942, and then sent to Fort Eustis, Va. From the latter he went to New Orleans and later to Panama Canal. Pvt. Vinson Haney is now serving in the South Pacific. Thomas F. Davis Taking Course In Florida Thomas F. Davis, motor machin ist mate, third class, of Waynes v i lie, recently reported to the Navy's Submarine Chas.r Training Center at Miami, Fla. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Thur man C. Davis of route 2, Davis worked for the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Com pany in Newport News, Va., prior to joining the navy in Spartanburg in May, 1943. Now undergoing an extensive and specialized trainii g in anti submarine warfare at the sub chaser school, the only service ac tivity of its kind on the east coast. Davis is learning to engineer the small ships of the sub chaser fleet, whose main task is to track down and destroy enemy l' -boats 1 You eat like a bird. What do you mean? WILBURN PAUL CAMP BELL has returned to his post at North Camp Hood, Tex., after spending a 19-day furlough here with his wife, the former Miss Ruth Worley, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Campbell. Cpl. Campbell was inducted at Camp Croft on January 22, 1943, and was sen to Fort Jackson. From the latter he was transferred to Camp Hood and then to his present post. He is attached to a tank destroyer division. Before en tering the service he was employed by the Champion Paper and Fibre Company in Hamilton, Ohio. He was transfered from the draft board in Hamilton to the local board. Lawrence Medford Given Promotion In Navy W. Lawrence Medford. son of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Medford. of Lake Junaluska, has recently com pleted a course in radio and has been promoted to Seaman First Class. He has been transferred to Little Creek, Va., for further training in radio. No. 1, who left here with Company "H", Na tional Guard Unit in September, 1940, is now serving overseas. He received his basic training at Fort Jackson. He was transferred to the Infantry and sent to Camp Rlunding, Fla. From the latter he was sent to Camp Forrest, Tenn., and then to Camp Atter bury, Ind., then to New York and overseas. Sgt. Smathers recently spent a 15-lay furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Smathers, of the Waynesville Road. He has won medals for expert pistolman, expert rifleman, and while on maneuvers in Tennessee won a medal for good conduct. He also made the high est score in his company on ma chinegun range, while at Atter bury. Prior to entering the service he was connected with the North Car olina State Department of Conser vation and Development, and was connected with the Balsam fish hatchery. Cutshaw Home On Brief Furlough From Overseas Pfc. Benjamin E. Cutshaw, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Cutshaw, Sr., of Maggt , ,a snending two weeks with his family after serving over, seas. Pfc. Cutshaw entered service August 29, 1942, as a volunteer and was inducted at Camp Croft, S. C, then went to Fort McClellan, Ala., for six weeks then sent over seas. Before entering service he was a student at W.T.H.S. First Baptists Are Sponsoring Mission Study Class Friday The First Baptist church is spon soring a Mission Study class on Friday, the 25th, at the church for the Woman's Missionary Society and the Y. W. A. of the following churches: Allen's Creek, Hazel wood, Ratcliff Cove, Barberville and Waynesville. The book entitled, "Christianity Our Citadel," will be taught by Rev. H. G. Hammett, pastor of the church. Supper will be served at 6:30. The men of the church are cor dially invited to attend. Crabtree Methodists To Hold All-Day Meeting The two Woman's Societies of Christian Service of the Crabtree charge of the Methodist church, will hold a joint meeting at the par sonage on Thursday, March 2. The meeting will begin at eleven o'clock, with the program center ing around the theme of "prayer." The afternoon session will be devoted to the study of the book, "The Church After The War," with the pastor, Rev. W. Grady Burgin, in charge.
