PUTNAM, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Putnam, ot Hazelwood, is now stationed at Fort Eustis, Va. He was inducted in the service in Oc tober, 1943, at Camp Croft, and from there was sent to Fort Jack son. From the latter he was sent to his present post, where he is at tached to the anti-aircraft divi sion. H. G. Hammett. The services will be centered around the theme, "The Christ I Know." Rev. Miller Freeman, of Ruther fordton, will lead the congrega tional singing and conduct the choirs and children's chorus. He will also present by means and ob jects, illustrated truths of the gos pel. This feature is called "The Gospel Pictured." Safety Expert Lecturing To School Children Walter Y. Hosier, National Safety Crusader, is spending the week in Haywood, addressing the school children on the importance of safety. In the past few years he has talked to over two and a half million children on this subject. 1 On Tuesdav he talked at the hiuh school, Clyde, Central Elementary, Hazelwood and East Waynesville. Yesterday he appeared at Bethel and Crabtree. Today and tomorrow he will be in the Canton area, addressing stu dents at Canton hijrh, Pennsylvania Avenue, Beaverdam, North Canton, Morning Star and Patton School. Mr. Hosier is the North Caro lina representative of the National Committee for the Conservation of manpower in war industries. He has appeared here before in the interest of safety, and address ed civic clubs, as well as staging a safety parade. In England XT KEEP Oil WITH WAR DONDS Local Church Group Wins In Baptist County Contests The First Baptist church here gained a number of recognitions in the contests staged at the Hay wood Baptist Associational meet ing held in Canton during the week. Among the winners from the local church were: In adult groups, Mrs. Milas Ferguson, for Bible Reading contest; In young peo ple's better speakers contest, Charles Gaddis; The intermediate choir won in the hymn sing con test; Miss Pollyana Gibbs carried off honors in the Intermediate Sword Drill. The winners will go to the re gional contests to be held in Hen dersonville on April 7 and 8 and if they are successful there will later compete in the Southern contest at Ridgecrest, in which representa tives from 18 states take part. Fines Creek Class To Give A Play The juniors of Fines Creek high school will present their annual class play on Friday night, April 7, at 8:30 o'clock in the school au ditorium. The play is, "Aunt Minerva and William Green Hill." The characters are: Nancy Walk er, Paul Rogers, Robert Ferguson, Gertrude Messer, Max James, Ruth Price. Kathryn Noland, Dorothy Rathbone, Edith Noland, J. K. Dot son and Frank Green. Mrs. Frank Kirkpatrick is di reeling the play. Lieut. McElroy Now In Tennessee Lieut. Sum M. McElroy, son of Mis. Mull left here with Company H, National Guard unit, and was first stationed at Fort Jackson and from there sent to Fort Benning Ga. From the latter he was trans ferrcd to Camp Blanding, Fla., and then to Camp Forrest, Tenn. From Camp Forrest he was sent to Camp Atterbury, Ind., and then to New York and overseas.
