C., or thereabouts. The first events are located on the east aide of the river Jordan; the rest on the. west aide. Joshua died at Lchechem. After the death of Moses the J.ord appointed Joshua, son of Nun, to lead the people of Israel Into the land He had promised them. He told Joshua of the great ands they were to take for their homeland and it may be men tioned that never, even In the time of Israel's greatest glory.' was all this land inhabited by them. First. Joshua chose two men to go to Jericho and spy secretly. They went to the house of a wom an named Rahab, but the two must have been seen entering her house because men came there at night to arrest them. Rahab, how ever, hid them on her roof under long stalks of drying flax, so that the men did not find them, and after they had left she let them down the wall with a window, as her house was built on the city wall. Jericho Afraid She told them that all the city had heard how God caused the Red sea to part for their crossing and all Jericho was afraid. She asked them to spare the lives of herself and all her kin for this great favor. They promised, and told her to bind a line of scarlet thread In the window and bring all her relatives to live with her. The two men hid in the mountains for three days until the pursuers gave up the search, then returned to Joshua. Next day the children of Israel began their march across the Jor dan with the ark of the covenant leading the way. The waters of the Jordan parted, as Joshua had aaid, and they passed over In safety. Joshua chose a man from each tribe and told each to take a atone from the bed of the river where the priests' feet had stood and bring them to him. And Joshua set them up as a nemo- retributed by Klnf Features eradicate, las. rial of the Lord's roorinMu Now all the people Inhabiting . - -T" ima prom to the Israelites were afraid cause of the Mraifr. children of Israel and the city Jericho was ahu im Hrh leaving' and no .n. i- Lord told Joshua to send severi priests with trumnt hj ark of the Lord, and armed men were to go before and behind, and they were to march around the city walls blowing trumpets. Seven days they marched around the city, blowing their horns, and on the seventh day the trumpets blew and the people all shouted Jd- the "walls- came tumbUnar down.- AH the Inhabit anta were put to the sword except Rahab and her people, and the city was burned, but the silver and gold, vessels of brass and iron, were put Into the treasury of the house of the Lord. Joshua 0 rows Old A long time after these events, the Lord gave Israel a rest from their enemies. Joshua had grown old and feeble and knew that his time was almost gone. He "called for all Israel and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their Judges, and for their officers," and told them that he would not be with them much longer. He re minded them of all the mercies the Lbrd had vouchsafed them, and warned them not to serve the false gods of the people among whom they dwelt, but to cleave io uieir own uod. "For the Lord hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day. "One man of you shall chase a thousand: to; the Lord our God, He It la that flghteth for you, and He hath promised you. 'Take heed, therefore, unto yourselves, that ye love the Lord your God." The people were told to choose whom they would serve, wheth er the gods of strangers or this their own God, "but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord," said Joshua. And all the people answered and said. "God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods." "And Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the Lord, that He had done for Israel." sat down and grabbed the menu the waitress promptly set before him. By the time he had scanned its contents, his wife had meekly taken her place opposite.
