First Home Game Of Sea
son Set For 8 O'Clock;
Band Will Be Present.
The Waynesville Mountaineers
will meet Murphy in the first home
game of the season Friday night
with the opening kickoff set for
8:00 o'clock.
Coach C. E. Weatherby has been
putting the Mountaineers through
rigid workouts this week ironing
out the kinks that showed up in
the Asheville game last week when
the locals dropped a 21 to 7 game
to the Maroons. The Mountaineers
came through the game with only
minor injuries and it is expected
that they will be in full strength
Friday night.
The team this year is of an ave
range weight with speed being their
main stay. It Is expected that
Murphy will present a fighting
eleven to tax the locals strength
to the utmost.
The Waynesville band has been
practicing hard for their part at
the game and Charles Isley, direc
tor of the music makers, is looking
forward to presenting the band on
the local gridiron for the first time
this season.
It is expected that a large crowd
will be on hand for the first home
game.
The probable starting lineup for
the Mountaineers will find Comp
ton and Collins out on the ends,
Whitner and Scates at tackles, Mor
ris and Burgin at guards and Ray
mond Phillips over the ball. In the
Mountaineers Drop
Opener to Asheville
Maroons 21 to 7
The Waynesville Mountaineers
dropped the opening game of the
season with the Asheville High
Maroon last Friday night by a
score of 21 to 7. Herb Hipps, star
Asheville quarterback, doing most
of the ball carrying, the Maroons
scored twice in the second period
and in the third period managed to
get another by a pass from Hipps
to Mitchel deep in Waynesville
territory.
The Mountaineers only score
came late in the fourth period after
a sustained drive from their own
territory to the one yard line where
Evans flipped a pass to Grahl for
the tally. Evans bucked the line for
the extra point. .'
The first quarter of the game
went scoreless with the Mountain
eers battling with their backs to
the wall most of the time but put
ing up a stiff stand in their own
territory.
The sensational run of Hipps for
85 yards in the second period was
the highlight of the game. The
local boys were unable to do much
with the slim fast Maroon star.
A large following of fans from
Waynesville were present for the
game, together with a goodly num
ber of service men stationed in
Asheville.
The Waynesville band had the
field all to themselves and put on
a swell show that brought admi
ration from all present.
