Scates Gets Purple Heart Corporal George F. Scates, son of Mrs. R. M. Scates of Hazelwood, has been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action in France June 18. He entered ser vice in Nov. 1942 at Fort Jackson. Trained at Camp Croft, Shenango, Pa., and was stationed at Camp Kilmer before sailing in June. Jaynes has just completed his training at Scott Field as a radio operator and upon leaving here will report for duty at Sel fridge Field. Mich. While at Scott Field Pvt. Jaynes won the title of heavy weight boxing cham pion. He entered the service on Sep tember 8, 194.1, and wa inducted at Camp Croft and from there was sent to the Greensboro Air Base, From Greensboro he was sent to Scott Field. At the time he enter ed the service Pvt. Jaynes was employed at the Dayton Rubber plant. Since her marriage to Pvt. Jaynes, Mrs. Jaynes has made her home in High Point with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Bronson Matney, where she has held a position. and fences; call in your neighbors to help and have rakes and water ready, and do not burn on a windy day: set fire in grass along the edge of the plowed strip to burn into the wind. Burn brush piles from the leeward and start on the uphill side of the field first. Burn one pile to test the wind, and then only as many piles at one time as you know you can handle; burn after 4 p. m. when air moisture is increasing. Be particularly care ful during the worst fire months, March, April and November; keep at least one man on the job until every spark is out.
