Aviation Expert
To Address The
Rotary Club
Captain Luther M- Roberts, of
the Army Air Forces, will address
the Rotary Club here Friday at
one o'clock.
Captain Roberts is with the
Army Airways' Communication
System in Asheville, and heads the
public relations' office there.
He will discuss as far as military
secrecy permits, the advancements
and accomplishments of aviation
in the present war.
Last week the program was in
charge of Dr. Joe Baxter, chairman
of the vocation service committee.
Dr. Baxter had each member tell
his boyhood vocation ambition, and
what influenced him in getting into
his present field. Out of the 40
members, only 2 or 3 were now
engaged at work which they had
selected in their boyhood days.
Sgt. James W. Mehaffey
Wins Combat Badge
Sergeant James W. Mehaffey, of
Hazelwood, has been cited by his
regiment of the 34th "Red Bull"
Division and awarded the Combat
Infantryman Badge for actual par
ticipation in combat with the enemy
on the Fifth Army Front in Italy.
Standards for the badge are high.
The decoration, which was recent
ly authorized by the War Depart
ment, is awarded to the infantry
soldier who has proven his fight
ing ability in combat. The hand
some badge consists of a silver
rifle set against a background of
infantry blue, enclosed in a silver
wreath.

B. M. 2c Lewis McCracken,
who is stationed in Maryland, spent
the week-end with his mother, Mrs.
Jarvis Chambers.
Clara F. Stephenson, H. A. 2c,
who is stationed at the Naval Hos
pital, Bethesda, Md., spent last
week with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Harley Stephenson.
Charlie Penland and daughter,
Katherine, have returned home
afer undtergoing operations in the
Haywood County Hospital.
Mrs. 0. A. Sizemore and family,
accompanied by Hilda Stevenson,
visited friends and relatives at
Lake Logan Sunday.
Dewey Chambers, of the U. S.
Navy, is visiting his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. C. C. Chambers.
Betty Gene Alley Is
Assistant Athletic
Director At St. John's
Betty Gene Alley has been nam
ed assistant athletic director for
girls at St. John's high school.
Miss Alley has assisted with
softball and soccer at Montreat
College, Montreat.
The major sports for girls at
St. John's high school are basket
ball,, softball, soccer, volleyball,
handball, tennis and badminton.

MR. AND MRS. K. C. UNDERWOOD, of Hazelwood, have four
sons in the service, three in the army and one serving in the navy.
They are (top left to right) Roy Underwood, M. M. third class, U. S.
Navy, entered the service on April 13, 1943, and took his boot train
ing at Bainbiidge, Mil. He is now serving in the South Pacific. Re
fore he entered the service he was employed in an airplane factory
in Miami.
Pvt. Jack Underwood entered the service on March 17, l'J44, and
was inducted at Camp Croft and from there sent to Fort Leonard
Wood, Mo. At the time he entered the service he was employed by
the Unagusta Manufacturing Company.
Pvt. Melvin Underwood entered the service on July 13, of this
year and was inducted at Camp Croft and from there was sent to
Camp McClellan, Ala. At the time he entered the service he was
employed by the Unagusta Manufacturing Company.
Pfc. Ben Underwood entered the service on January 5, 1942, and
is now serving in Kngland. He was inducted at Camp Croft and from
there was sent to Tampa, Fla., where he received training before be
ing sent overseas. At the time he entered the Air Corps Pfc. Under-

James Kerr Boone, Electrician's
Mate, third class, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert H. Boone of Waynes
ville R.F.D. No. 1, has arrived for
a 15-day leave with his parents.

He entered tne service in mhiu,
194;j while a student at Brevard
College. He received his boot train-
i r (r at RMinhride-e. Md.. and from
there was sent to New York. From
the latter he was transferred to
Boston and from there assigned to
sea duty. He spent eight months
in the Atlantic waters.
Upon leaving here he will report
to Boston for further orders.

James Everett Smith, Aviation
Machinist Mate, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Paul Smith of Dellwood, is
now stationed at the Naval Air
Technical Training Center in Mem
phis, Tenn. He entered the service
while he was a student in the Way
nesville high school and enlisted in
Raleigh on Jan. 11 of this year.
He took his boot training in
Jacksonville, Fla., and from there
was sent to his present post of
training.
Woman (to grocer) : "1 want
some nice big apples for my sick
husband. Do you know if they
have been sprayed with poison?"
Grocer: "No, ma'am. You'll have
to get that at the drugstore."
