M. Long shore. Organized public hunts for deer, bt-ar and squirrel will be held during the next few months, Mr. Krueger stated. The Pisgah National Game Pre serve and the Mt. Mitchel, Boone and Sherwood Wildlife Manage ment Areas are jointly administer ed by tle North Carolina Division of Game and Inland Wisheries and the U. S- Forest Service under co operative agreements drawn up pome years ago. Always popular with the sports men, the hunts this year are ex pected to attract nimrods from all walks of life. Due to wartime re strictions on travel, local partici pation promises to predominate, although hunters from nearly every State in the Union have attended in other years. Big Game Hunt on the Pisgah Preserve Highlight of this year's activi ties will be the Tenth Public Big Game Hunt on the Pisgah Preserve, which is scheduled for the period beginning November 6 and ending November 18. Deer and bear of both sexes will be harvested in order to remove the animals which are surplus to the carrying capa city of the area. Applications for the Pisgah Big Game Hunt will be mailed on Oc- QgggfftFffl HA j CAlCtUM tober 1 to persons who have asked to be placed on the mailing list. After October 1. applications may be obtained from the N. C. Depart ment of Game and Inland Fisheries, Asheville, Forest Supervisor, U. S. Forest Service, Asheville, or from the District Forest Ranger, U.S.F. S-, Pisgah Forest. To be considered, applications (accompanied by remittances) must reach the North Carolina Depart ment of Game and Inland Fisheries at Asheville, not later thanl2:00, noon, October 16, 1944. One thous and applications will be accepted. If more than one thousand appli cations are received, a public draw ing will be held by the Chamber of Commerce of Brevard, to select the successful applicants. Permits will cost $7.50 for regu lar check-in and check-our hunts, and $10.00 for wilderness hunts. Each hunter will be allowed a three-day period in which to take either a bear or a deer. No extra charge will be made for bear, a change from previous procedure. The main hunts are under care ful supervision. Transportation to and from shooting compartments will be provided by the hunters. Persons assigned to these hunts will be checked in each morning at 6:30 A. M. and checked out each evening at 6:00 P. M. Sleeping and eating accommodations may be obtained in the several towns which are in close proximity to the preserve. Campgrounds will be available if desired. Women will be allowed on these hunts. The wilderness hunts are pro vided for those who wish to hunt under primitive conditions and en joy a good camping trip. Camping areas have been set aside for the Wilderness hunts. Floored tents with stoves and folding cots are furnished for sleeping quarters. Open air grates with fuelwood for cooking are also available. The hunter should bring his blankets, cooking equipment, food and other miscellaneous necessities. Arran gements for packing equipment and game may be made while checking in. Women will not be allowed on the wilderness area hunts. Firearms will be restricted to non-automatic rifles of a caliber .250-3000 or .25-35 or larger (with 'the exception of .32-20) and shot guns 16 gauge or larger, using single ball ammunition. Full patch ammunition may not be used. Mt. Mitchell and Boone Deer Hunts Buck deer only will be hunted on the Mt. Mitchel and Boone areas (November 8 through 17, and 22nd through 30th respectively, exclusive of Sundays). Applications and ad ditional information may be ob tained from Chief Refuge Supervis or Mease, Marion, or the Forest Supervisor in Asheville. No. 1, is now serving with the invasion forces in France. He was inducted at Camp Croft and from there sent to Camp Stuart, Ga., and then to a Florida post and back to Camp Stuart. He was also stationed for a time at a post in Massachusetts. He volunteered in the service in August, 1942, and at the time he entered the service was employed by the Clinchfield Manufacturing Company of Marion. Applications will be received only from persons having bona fide bear dogs or who are in position to ob tain such animals. Participants will be selected by lot. Each applicant selected will be allowed to invite twenty-four per sons to accompany him. Each ap plicant must submit with his ap plication a cashier's check for $50. Bag limit is one bear per person per season. Pisgah Preserve Squirrel Hunt A squirrel hunt will be held on the Pisgah Game Preserve from Monday, October 9, through Satur day, October 14. The Davidson River area will be open from Oc tober 9th to 11th, and the North Mills and Bent Creak areas from October 12th through 14th. Permits for this hunt can be ob tained at the checking stations for the Davidson River Area, and at the Davidson River Ranger Sta tion. REC TOR, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hayden Rector, of Luck, is now serving with the invasion forces in South ern France. Sgt. Rector was in ducted at Camp Croft and from there was sent to Fort McClellan, Ala. From the latter he was sent to New York and then overseas. He first served in North Africa and was then sent to Italy and later to France. Sgt. Rector entered the service in March, 1942. He has been over seas for the past 13 months.
