Francis well known farmer of the Ratcliff Cove section, was the master grower of turnips in Hay wood County. This week another announcement is forthcoming. The honor to date will have to be claimed by Verlin Campbell in the turnips he has grown for the Grace Lumber Company on the rich black loamy soil on Max Patch. Four rutabagas grown by Mr. Campbell weighed 23 and three quarters pounds and four turnips totaled 20 and a half pounds, as against four turnips grown by Mr. Francis weighing 12 pounds. One Campbell turnip weighed B pounds and one of the rutabagas ran the scales up to seven pounds. Both the Francis and Campbell vegetables were weighed in The Mountaineer office and on the same scales. The display is still at this newspaper office. Mr. Campbell it also a master potato grower. Gunter Reported Slightly Mounded In Italy Private Robert L. Gunter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawery Gunter, of Waynesville, R.F.D. No. 1, was slightly wounded on September 12th in Italy, according to infor mation received by his parents in a message from the War Department. Pvt. Gunter entered the service in February, 1942, and was induct ed at Fort Jackson. From the lat ter he was transferred to Fort Eustis, Va., and later sent to Camp Wolters, Texas. From Texas he was sent to Fort George Meade, Md. He served on combat for six months before he was wounded. Before entering the service he had charge of the Cy Moak firm on Allen's Creek. Pvt. Gunter has two brothers in the service: Pfc. Hughey Gunter, who is now serving with the Air Force in England, and Cpl. Coy R. Gunter, now stationed at Fort Jackson. Oct. 26 OUVKK A YOU N'T, JR., F. 1, c, son of Mi. and Mrs. Oliver A. Yount, recently spent a ten-day leave here with his parents and friends, having recently returned from sea duty on a destroyer. He participated in a 64-hour battle in the Normandy invasion. Fireman Yount volunteered in the Navy 18 months ago and was inducted at Norfolk. Va., and from there was sent to Bainbridire. .Md.. for his boot training, after which he was assigned to sea duty. He was a student in the Waynesville Township high school at the time he volunteered, and later returned at commencement for his diploma. During his high school years, he was employed at the Pet Dairy Products Company during the summer vacations. Fireman Yount left here for New York where he reported for his next assignment. CPL. JAMES L. YOUNT, who is stationed at the Oliver General Hospital in Augusta, joined his brothers here for a visit with their parents. It was the first time they had seen each other in 18 months. Cpl. Yount, who has been in the service for the past two and one years, has been stationed at his present post for two years where he is serving as chief projectionist in the government theatre there and also part of his time in the broadcasting studio. Sgt. Cecil B. Yount, another brother, who was stationed in the Hawaiian Islands for 38 months, was killed in action on Saipan following the invasion on July 8.
