Man Sorry, old man, but I can't lend you any money. Lending money breaks up friendships, you know. Friend But what of it? We never were very good friends. SN H AP OTS By FRANCES FRAZIER Staff Writer Recently a bridge player holding a power-house of a hand, made the four no-trump bid thus asking his partner for aces. Suddenly rea lizing that he himself held the four aces, he exploded with: "Wasn't that a foolish ask?" Each and every day of our lives we make some "foolish ask.'' Per haps we ask ourselves: "Why should I buy more bonds when I already have all I want?" or: "Why should I d'.ny myself this, that or the other when I know some peo ple are getting all they want?" "Why should I save on gas when I see a dozen or more wasting gas that we are urged to save?" WHY? WHY? WHY? Perhaps the most colossal and foolish ask of modern history was that made when Hitler queried: "Why can't I rule the world?" And the second was like unto it when Japan, bowing low to conceal the dagger at her belt, smoothly and smugly cooed: "And, honor able please, may I have the extreme pleasure of aiding you in this hap py task?" And you see the reply they are getting. Somehow it has always seemed to me that the fellow who uses bhe act of the other fellow to salve his American Legion Auxiliary Pledges Support Of 6th Drive The members of the American Legion Auxiliary are cooperating with the Sixth War Bond Drive and all members are being urged to buy a bond during the campaign. Members who are buying bonds are requested to get in touch with Mrs. Leo Martell and give her the amount of the bonds bought so that the information may be kept by the Auxiliary. This information may also be left with Mrs. Lester Burgin at Burgin's store on Main Street. The Auxiliary is anxious to learn how many members are taking part in the drive. If the information is not ready before the next meeting on Drc. 2, the members are asked to bring it to the meeting. own conscience, is hunting even the tiniest loop-hole through which he can escapi- a duty that is unden iably his. Just because a hold-up man drapes a gun caressingly near your ribs and extracts the in ner lining of your wallet, would you think that a justification for you to go thou and do likewise? How often we have heard this: "We really should charge them more than the other people because when we go to their resort, they push op the prices to exhorbitant heights." All of these excuses seem such pitifully weak alibis that we should, if we find ourselv es needing such outlets, provide some new ones. The others are bromidic and worn thread-bare. Let's ask ourselves wise ques tions instead of foolish ones. Why not this: "If I go without that new what-you-may-call-it, why can't I buy that extra bond so sorely need ed?" "Why can't I walk instead of putting in those extra gallons of gas to which I am entitled?" 1M i ArM u.adtO& ctv All Shoes Fitted By Experts With Aid of X-Ray. MASSIE'S DEPARTMENT STORE C. J. REECE. And you dare not use that old stand-by: "I'll just leave it until morning." Well, listen. Get the broom and carefully sweep the glass particles into a neat little pile in one corner, easily accessible. Then get a couple of sheets of old newspaper, soak thoroughly in water for a minute or two, then drop outspread over the broken glass Carefully, without pressing too hard, scoop up the wet paper. The glass will cling affectionately to its dampness. See if it doesn't. No cut fingers, no muss, no fuss. C. 1 The Greeneville Tobacco Rflar Is Ready To Open On December 11th High Prices Are Again Expected to Rule for This Cr Due to much of the crop taking second growth, it hasn't cured out, and but tobacco has been graded. In fact, a large percentage of the crop should not stripped before January. Because of this fact, and the labor shortage, the season will likely extend over a longer period. There should be no complain!! this respect in view of the fact that the ceiling prices will remain the same throaj out the entire sales season. The War has caused much shifting of tobacco forces. However, Greeneville beind ESTABLISHED MARKET, both small and large manufacturers, as heretofore be represented, assuring strong competition on all grades.
