Miss Billie B. Cordey
Of Alabama Becomes
Bride Of Sgt. J. D. Ashe
Announcement has been made of
the marriage of Miss Billie Bess
Cordey, of Aliceville, Ala., to Staff
Sergeant James D. Ashe, formerly
of Waynesville, K. 1 . U. iSo. 1
which took place on November 4th
1944. The bride is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Cordey, of
Aliceville, Ala.
Staff Sgt. Ashe was promoted to
his oresent rank on Decmber Z4
1944. He was among the first
group to leave Waynesville under
the selective service system, ana
was inducted on juiy ib, is4i.
Sgt. Ashe has had several
months of overseas service to his
credit. He is now stationed at the
Armv Services Forces Headquar
ters of the Prisoner of War Camp
in Alabama.
When the war is over Set. and
Mrs. .Ashe plan to come to Way
nesville and make their home.
Methodist Youth
Fellowship Meeting To
Be Held On Jan. 15th
The Methodist Youth Fellowship
group meeting which was to have
been held the first of the month
has been postponed until January
the 15th. It will be held at the
First Methodist church of Canton
at 7:30 o'clock.
Rev, George Hood, chaplain of
Moore General Hospital, will be
the guest speaker. The Canton
high school Glee Club will also
have a part on the program.
Miss Lucy Leopard
Becomes Bride Of
Howard Sutton
Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Leopard, of
Waynesville, have announced the
marriage of their daughter, Miss
Lucy Leopard, to Howard Sutton,
son of Mr. and Mrs. G, C. Sutton,
also of Waynesville.
The marriage took place in Clay
ton, Ga., on December 28. The
young couple were accompanied by
a small group of close friends.
For the present Mr. and Mrs.
Sutton are making their home
with the briegroom's parents in
Waynesville.
Miss Rosemary Herman, student
at the Woman's College of the Unl
versity of North Carolina, returned
on Tuesday to Greensboro, and will
resume her work after spending
the Christmas holidays with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest K.
Herman.
Bud Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Dick Smith, of Hazelwood, who is
attending Western Carolina Teach
ers College, has resumed his studies
after spending the holidays with
his parents.
Miss Martha Mae Wyche, who
is a member of the sophomore class
at the Woman's College of the
University of North Carolina, has
returned to her work.
Miss Louise Martin, freshman at
the Woman's College of the Uni
versity of North Carolina, spent
the holidays here with her family.
She returned on Tuesday to re
sume her work.
Miss Mildred Milner, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Milner, of
Waynesville, has returned to
Western Carolina Teachers Col
lege, where she is a student after
spending the Christmas holidays
with her parents.
Miss Lois Massie, who is a sen
ior at the University of Tennes

Miss Martha Best, of Crabtree,
who spent the vacation with her
parents, has returned to Western
Carolina Teachers College, where

Phil Medford, who spent the
holidays here with his parents, Dr.
and Mrs. N. M. Medford, has re
turned to Atlanta, where he is a
student at the School of Dentristy.
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Noland Observe
Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Noland of
the Ratcliff Cove section of the
county, observed their fiftieth wed
ding anniversary at their home on
Christmas Day, when all of their
children were with them.
Mr. and Mrs. Noland, who are
widely connected in Haywood coun
ty, were married at the home of
the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Andy Ferguson in the Iron Duff
section, on December 25, 1894. The
ceremony was performed by the
late James L. , Queen, brother-in-law
of the couple.
Mr. Noland, who is at present
serving as United States Com
missioner, has been active in poli
tics for a number of years. He
served as tax collector for Haywood
county for seven years and was
also county auditor and treasurer
for a period of six years.

Hold Meeting On

vice of the First Methodist Church
will meet in the Ladies Parlor on
Tuesday afternoon, 3:30 o'clock,
January 9th, with Mrs. Bonner Ray,
president, presiding. Mrs. Dee
Clark will have charge of the pro
gram. All members are urged to
be present for the first meeting of
the year.

Military School, who spent the
Christmas holidays with his moth
er, Mrs. Edith P. Alley, returned
to school the first of the week.

Henry Mathis, son of George
IWathis of Biltmore. The marriage
took place on Tuesday, December
2ti, in Clayton, Ga.
The bride is now employed by
Wellco Shoe Corporation. The
bridegroom is a patient in the
Walter Reed hospital in Washing
ton, D. C- H.' volunteered in the
service in 1941 and has recently
returned from 29 months of over
seas service. Cpl. Mathis served
in the South Pacific arva and was
awarded the Purple H art for gal
lantry when wounded in combat.
He is also entitled to wear three
battle stars. Prior to entering the
service he was engaged in farming
in this county.

On Christmas Eve
Mrs. John B. Best was honored
with a Home Coming Day at her
home on Crabtroe on Christmas
Eve, by her children, grandchildren,
all of whom were present, and her
close friends.
Among those present were her

months of sea duty; a grandson,
serving with the U. S. Coast Guard,
stationed at New London, Conn.,
and other grandsons in the service
