Ljviijgstgn,. Montana. The 1944 Mayfield award, "Koad to Salem', by Adeliade L. Fries, should be read with inter est by all North Carolinians. This book may be borrowed from the Haywood County library. This is the story behind the Easter Sunrise service for which Winston-Salem is noted. It is a factual story, but through it shine : the drama, the color, the charm of aunique frontier experi ence. The year is 17M; the month, November; the place Carolina frontier, Farther North, George Washington, twenty-one, is car rying n important message to Fort Le Boeuf from Williams burg. Ten-year-old Thomas Jefferson is at Shndwell looking toward the Blue Ridge. In Carolina Daniel Boone, 19, is living on the "V ad kin and Governor Glen is build-, ing Fort Prince George among the Cherokees. From Norfolk, Wil mingtn, Charles Town, Savannah, cargoes of tobacco, deerskins, rice, mdio, lumber and naval stores sail or Europe, and ships bring back manufactured goods from the Old World. "As a result of this thriv ing commerce, mansions have vis en along th tidewater rivers. The College of William and Mary is sixty years olJ. Benjamin Frank lin has begun to improve postal service. But on the Carolina frontier there are no mansions, no col leges, no roads, no postal ser vice. Here tomahawk flashes and the cabins of settlers go up in flames. Into this region a Mora vian Bishop leads a small com pany of carefully chosen men to found an organized community, a center of Christian life ami ser vice. These Moravians are a cul tivated people. They have eomo by way of Bethlehem, Penn., from Saxony, a highly industrialized re gion given to urban living and to the cultivation of the arts and crafts. They brng to the Caro lina frontier, their music, their architecture, their medicine, their law, their love of family Jifc and above all the religion for which they have suffered persecution. It is the story of this com munity that "The Road to Salem" tells a (list hand account by four time married Catherine, who saw it all hapiHUi. Miss Fries has translated her story from the crabbed German script of her autobiography written in lWI and has supplemented it from other contemporary materials to tell a story of American life which few Americans know. , Miss F'ries, herself a Moravian and a descendant of the founders in North Carolina, is now Archiv ists of the Southern Province of the Moravian Church and a dis tinguished member of a number of historical societies. She is the author of several books on Mora vians and is translator and editor of others. M Re$ Estate Transfers Clyde Townhip Pearce Holder, et ux to Ada C. Dotson, et vir. , Fine Creek Township L. ' If the legislature -ar-:c:. out this recommendation, it would mean new hospitals in at least 20 counties, and the enlargement of these in at least 50 other counties. This recommendation is based on a well demonstrated iact; Kurai hospitals do attract more doctors to rural communities. Results of a survey, conducted by Dr. W. S. Rankin, trustee of the Duke Endowment and direc tor of its hospit. 1 u!' tion, and reported by him in a lecture to the School of Hygiene and Pub lie Health of Johns Hopkins Uni versity, prove this point. Dr. Ham ilton says. Dr, Rankin pointed out three ways in which the addition or im provement of these hospitals will also bring better medical services to the people of rural North Car olina. ' These points are: The hospital attracts the young, highly compet ent physician with from two to five years post-graduate hospital experience. Second, the hospital improves an inadequate medical service by multiplying the pro. fessronal capacity . of the physi cians in the community'' Third, a rural hospital greatly improves inadequate' medical care, especial ly for those of limited means.
