Forty years ago there was less than 500 public health nurses in the United States. In 1944 this number increased to 20,000. In order to develop n health program that will include the more than 1,000 counties in the United States, who now have lit tle or no public health nursing service, more than three times this number will be needed. A recent estimate by the U. S. Pub lic Health Service calls for a to tal of 69.000 community public nurses plus 20,0011 industrial nurses. Public health nurses are gradu ate registered nurses who have had post-graduate work in public health nursing. For the dura tion of the war graduate register ed nurses arc being used under a special classification as War Emergency Nurses. Public health nursing ltas been declared an essential service. CPL. TALMADGE L. SHKK HAN, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Sheehan, of Waynesville, is now serving in Germany. He entered the army on September US, 15)4 0, ut Fort Jackson and before being sent overseas was stationed at Camp Gordon, Ga., Fort Dix. and Fort Jackson. He has been over seas for one year, having been stationed first in England. At the time he entered the service he was employed by Hyatt and Com pan v. DAVID A. TAYLOR. Ph. M. .'fc, son of Mr. and Mrs. U. H. Taylor, of Waynesville. R.F.D. No. 1, is now stationed on the New Hebrides Islands. He volunteer ed in the Navy in October, 1D42, and took bis boot training at Nor folk, Va., and from there was sent to Portsmouth, Va., and later to Jacksonville, Fla. From the latter he was sent to Pensacola, Fla.. and then to Shoemaker, Calif., and from there to his pres ent post. He was trained in the States as a dental technician. A graduate of the local high school he was employed at the Pood Store and later at Balentine's Grocery store before entering the service. Pvt. Samuel Inrnan Stationed In Italy Private Samuel L.'Inman, who recently agreed to a mutual trans fer from his former unit in North Africa to his present one in Italy, so that his transfer would bring a buddy close to his wife at the North African base, ia now with an aviation engineer - battalion building bases for Allied war pow er in Italy. Pvt. Inman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles In man. Waynesville. A veteran of two years over seas service, Inman is attached to his present unit as a medic. He entered the service in April, school at ('amp Grant, 111. He 1041, and attended the medical wears the European-AfricanrMid-dle Fast Theatre of Operations Ribbon with two bronze battle participation stars for serving in North Africa aixl Italy. Inman is a graduate of the local high school. '41, and was formerly cm- I ployed with Smith's Transfer as a truck driver. His wife lives in Waynesville and his brother is also in the service, somewhere overseas. He wears the Good Conduct Ribbon for exemplary behavior. Haywood county has two pub lic health nurses to serve a popu lation of 34,804 against the recom mended one nurse to every 5,000 population. During the past year (1944) these nurses made the fol lowing field and office nursing visits: Communicable disease control, 426; tuberculosis control, 273; ma ternity prenatal supervision, 58; maternity postnatal supervision, 28: infant supervision, 166; pre school supervision, 226; school health supervision, 140; morbidity supervision, 48; crippled children supervision, 31; visits to schools, 74. Edward Glavich, Jr. Given Infantryman's Badge Private First Class F.dward Glavich, Jr., serving with the 100th Division in France, has re cently been awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge. The soldier's father, Edward Glavich. resides at Route 2, Way nesville.
