The recommendations have been set within $2,000,000 of estimated- expenditures, Gov. Cherry says he won't permit spending more than is taken in, so how can any big idealistic programs be under take' i unless we want to go in i the hole again as we did under Gardner' administration? MR. AND MRS. J. P. HOYLE have announced the-marriage of their daughter, Miss Mary Wilma Hoyle, to Staff Sergeant Ralph j Stanton Lucas, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Lucas, of Indian Head, Md. The marriage took place in Greenville, S. C, in a quiet cere mony on December .'!, lull. Sgt. Lucas has returned to his post overseas and Mrs. Lucas is residing with her parents. FIGURES Due to the fact that much of this State's revenue epines from sales tax, intangibles, and incomes, North Carolina's income is closely linked with the Nation's business. We figure that we will have an income in this State of one-half million dollars for every billion taken in for the United States. Last year, the Nation's income was around 150 billion, ami this State's was 76 million. The estimate for this year for the Nation is around 130 billion from January 1 through Decem ber 31, the calendar year. But out State operates on a fiscal year, which will begin July L 1945, and will go through June 30, 1946. So we can figure with the Nation from July 1 through December, but we don't know what our in come will be from next January through next June, hence we have to figure conservatively ... 65 million seems about right. phy", that's out. TEACHERS Any big raises above those recommended by the Advisory Budget Commission for teachers are out, loo. Take it or leave it. There is a report that some teachers plan to resign at the end of the sixth month, or along there, if big raises are not forthcoming. Well, the late Rev. W. V. Brown, of Yadkin county, remark ed one time that if he had ten million dollars, lie would use it for the cause of the Lord. He would take the money, he said, and hire as many ministers as he possibly could to tu it preaching and he would then give the rest of the money to those he couldn't hire to quit. Those who could be bought into resigning, he ex plained, were not fit to be preach ers, anyhow. Chances are that few good teachers will quit . . . and those who do get out . well, good riddance. They will come straggling back after the war. Here's hoping they don't get in again. least $!2,") basic pay as compared with $70 in 1 133 but it will not be much more, if any more. And remember this: Gov. Cherry would like to give the teachers more . . and will, if funds are available. $125 The monthly salary an A-Grade teacher will be of at INSANE Don't expect much money for work on asylums for the insane. Dix Hill, for instance, about which you have heard so lliucr, Has not been able to spend the $900,000 set up for it two years ago. Then what is the use of appropriating more money? Much of the two-years-ago appro priation was for new buildings, liut the materials have not been available, and for labor, but, who is going to work at an insane asylum when he can work any where else? An insane asylum is not pretty thing, nothing to wax poetic about, even if it is housed in u palace. NO If you have been keeping up with the Legislature, you have heard and read n great deal about tearing up the Conservation and Development setup- divorcing the Inland Fisheries and Game Divi sion from its parent. President Roosevelt in a recent statement called upon the American people to aid in the task of getting food produced in 1945 and seeing that it is conserved and shared. The statement follows: ; "During the past three years every Amer ican who has played a part in the job of growing, conserving, harvesting, distribut ing and processing our food supply has done a magnificent job. "As we enter a new year, the demands for our food at home and abroad are so great that it is essential for every man and woman to do everything to help in the huge task of getting food produced and seeing that it is conserved and shared.
