CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
By S. A. JONES, Secretary
In expounding the ideas and pro-1
jects planned hy the Chamber of
Commerce, our Town Officials and
others, for the betterment of our
town, communities and county; for
plans for the future that must be
built upon every day; for working
towards sanitation and cleanliness;
for endeavoring to provide recrea
tional facilities and improving our
accommodations; for trying to do
all we can for our own people and
our siiMinier visitors; and also in
making criticisms, we must not
overlook the fact that we also have
a lot of which to be thankful and
proud.
How often do we stop in thought
and gaze with reverence and grati
tude at these magnificent moun
tains that surround us, that belong
to us, a Cod-given privilege that
we live amidst such beauty. We
can feel good over the fact that
Waynesville is a fine place in
which to live. We want to make
it more so, along with our natural
beauties, for others to feel that
way, by doing what we can in im
proving our man-made surround
ings and creating interests.
We have a lot of deep-feeling,
unselfish and generous people
here, which is portrayed in the
fact that Waynesville and Haywood
County have gone over the top in
every drive and appeal made for
the good and benefit of others
also. We went over our quota in
our six War Bond Drives, the War
Fund, Ked Cross, i'olio. Boy Scout
and church drives.
Haywood County bonds sell on
a one and a half percent basis.
Our County has one of the lowest
bonded indebtedness in the State
per capita. We own our water
shed of 11,000 acres, also our own
water and iignt ilistrirwtu)g sys
tems. Our town tax rate is $1.40,
our county tax rate is $1.30 per
hundred, both based on a forty
percent valuation.
Haywood County now has in this
World War II, and had in World
War I and the Civil War, more
volunteers than any oilier county
in the United States, per capita,
and more in the Spanish-American
War than any other county in
North Carolina, per capita.
Our city manager, mayor and
officials are to be commended for
their interest and efforts for Way
nesville and the County. They
have given us some badly needed
improved streets recently and plan
to improve others. Before1 sum
mer they hope to gravel the new
cemetery road and perhaps im
prove and repair the old one.
We now have ten containers on
our streets to make it easy for
all to help keep our town clean
and free from rubbish and debris.
The names of the streets are to
be painted on the curbs, which
will eliminate much confusion in
direct ions.
We have now a wonderful Test
Farm, which will be a big help
in the future of our agricultural
and farming enterprizes and will
assist and benefit all our farmers

and the young Future Farmers of
America. Our Welfare Depart
ment has done excellent work in
their field, which has many varied
and numerous services. Our Hod
Cross Association has boon and is
a great benefit to this territory.
Our Community Council and their
Recreational Center has afforded
a great deal of interest and plea
sure to our community. All of
these organizations are to be com
mended and they, too, have plans
for expansion and doing greater
things for our town and county.
There are ol hers we haven't space
for now.
We all know there is much to
be done and it will be accomplish
ed, but some of the plans will
materialize slowly at present, due
to the shortage of manpower. But
there are many projects that can
and will go forward rapidly, with
the help and active cooperation
and interest of all our citizens, of
ficials, the Chamber of Commerce
and other organizations. Let's all
work together for a better town,
